Building in Harmony using cordwood masonry
Harmony Hill Retreat
Center is offering a work-
shop on building with cord-
wood masonry through their
Living in Harmony sustain-
ability workshops.
On Saturday, July 11,
Harmony Hill will be offer-
ing a workshop called Build-
ing in Harmony: Building
Projects Using Sustainable
Materials.
This one-day workshop
at Harmony Hill will teach
you how to create a building
project using cordwood ma-
sonry, a building technique
that has been around for
many years. Walls are con-
structed of log ends cut from
rounds of wood, using a spe-
cial mortar mix.
"This method creates
beautiful, rustic and well-
insulated structures with
the warmth and charm of
stone masonry, and is also
low cost," says Michele Ra-
ven, facilities manager and
building project assistant
for Harmony Hill.
At this workshop you'll
receive hands-on training
in using this unique build-
ing method, and take home
plans for building your
own cordwood structure. A
whole-foods lunch is includ-
ed in this workshop.
The Living in Harmony
series will continue on Sat-
urday, September 5, with
Food in Harmony: Celebrat-
ing the Harvest. This work-
shop will show how to light-
en the load on our environ-
ment by growing your own
food and buying seasonal
produce from local growers.
For information about
Harmony Hill's sustainabil-
ity workshops, including
dates and registration de-
tails visit www.harmony-
hill.org or call 360-898-
2363.
Recently Les Schwab teamed with the
Rubber Manufacturers Association to
check the tire air pressure on vehicles
that came into some of our steres.
Approximately 1,100 vehicles were in.
spected, and this is what we found:
Only 5% of vehicles had four
properly inflated tires.
58% of vehicles had at least one
under inflated tire.
@ 26% of vehicles had at least one
tire under inflated by 8 psi.
34% of vehicles had at least one
tire under inflated by 6 psi.
6 47% of vehicles had at least one
tire under inflated by 4 pi. .....
Tires may lose up to 1 psLpur month.
Many vehicles equipped with tire pales-
sure monitoring systems would not
issue a warning even after a drop in
tire pressure of 8 psi. These systems
issue a low pressure warning only after
tire pressure drops 25%.
Properly inflated tires can improve fuel
efficiency by 3.3% and save $.06 a
galtnn at the pump. Approximately
1,2 billion gallons of fuel are wasted
each year by U.S, motorists driving on
under inflated tires.
