Masks: Residents say mask mandate based on false stats

“There is some confusion as to where
the order came from,” Trask wrote to
the Journal. “The face coverings order
came from the Secretary of Health,
John Wiesman. I support our sheriff,
his department and their decisions. The
face covering order is a public health
measure, not a mandate to detain, cite
or arrest violators. In fact, a spokes-
person from the Governor’s Office said
local law enforcement will emphasize
‘education and voluntary compliance
rather than legal enforcement.’ ”
In an interview Wednesday morning
with the Journal, Dr. Stein, the coun-
ty’s public health officer, said he agrees
the focus should be on education.
“We are on the same page,” he said
of the county commissioners. He added,
“Word of mouth is a tool to help reduce
the risk.”
Stein said there is much false infor—
mation on the coronavirus. He suggests
people seek information from Mason
County Public Health, The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, and

The anti—mask demonstrators on
Friday carried American flags and
signs that read “I Can’t Breathe,” “CO-
VID Hoax,” “Governors don’t make
laws and masks don’t work,” and “Sher-
iff Casey Salisbury, will you protect my
rights??? Yes? No?”
Together, they sang “God Bless
America” and recited the Pledge of Al-
legiance.
None of them wore face masks.
North Mason resident Renee Newell
created the protest and advertised it
on Facebook. The Facebook event page
stated the purpose of the protest was to
“rally the Mason County Sheriffs office
and protest Jay Inslee’s unconstitution-
al face mask mandate.”
Cindy, a Shelton resident who would
not give her last name, said the gover-
nor’s mandate is illegal; only the state
Legislature is allowed to make such a
decision, she said.
Cindy said the mandate is “based on
fear and false statistics.”
“We want our voices heard,” she
said. “Our sheriff is the primary law
enforcement official in our county. Will
he stand up for our rights? We want an
affirmation.”
Nancy C. Williams said she was
demonstrating because “our freedom
and our rights are being taken from us.”
“This is not a political rally,” she told
the other demonstrators. “This is about
our First Amendment rights.” She add-

ed, “We want to educate the people.”
Grapeview resident Dale Whitten said
he found out about the gathering through
word of mouth only minutes before it
occurred, and “came down here to show
support.” He said he doesn’t support Wear-
ing a mask because he believes wearing a
mask depletes your oxygen levels.
“Especially for younger kids, you
know, growing minds, they need all
the oxygen they can get,” Whitten said.
“You out too much COZ and nitrogen in
your system and then you’re really get-
ting down.” ’
According to the World Health Orga-
nization, “the prolonged use of medical
masks when properly worn, does not
cause CO2 intoxication nor oxygen de-
ficiency.”
“I’ve been by a few stores and asked
them how they are going to implement
the tyranny of (Gov.) Inslee,” Whitten
said. “We went in Walmart, they didn’t
say nothing and Fred Meyer isn’t say-
ing anything, just basically it is up to
the customers to police themselves.”
The demonstrators tried to go inside
the Sheriffs Office building, but the
door was locked, and a sign said it was
closed.
“Can we break the Windows?” one
man asked the crowd.
“No, that’s only in Seattle,” a woman
replied.
Spurling instead came outside to ad-
dress the demonstrators.
