HARSTINE NEWS
The island’s beautiful flowers and a fond farewell
year the wildflowers along
the island roads are more
prevalent and just so much
more exciting. Thousands of
long-stemmed Shasta daisies
have grown in hordes with no
idea of social distancing. Their
white petals surround a gold-
en eye that seems to watch
and follow as I drive past in
my car. And these daisies are
complemented by various hues
of purple foxgloves. These tall, stately
plants rise up above the daises and
the grasses and yell back at me. The
wind blows the sway of the tall
against the short and there is rhythm

community hall is construct-
ed there won’t be a need to
borrow a lot of money. The
plan is to build a new com—
munity hall behind the fire
station that is next to our
century-old hall. No, there
is no plan to tear down or
discard the current hall. The
new hall will be larger and
more modern and be able to
keep up with the population
growth of our island. The old
hall is the cornerstone of the Harst-
ine Island community and with care
it will continue that role for the next
100 years. The new hall would relieve
some of the day-to-day wear our pres-
ing it through your RMD (required
minimum distribution). You can con-
tribute cash and make out your check
now to HICC and mail it to: Trea—

In 1955, my grandparents bought
a lake property on Hicks Lake in
Thurston County. I grew up on the
lake spending almost every sum—

Can you believe that a year ago,
June 14, was the 50th anniversary of
the Harstine Island Bridge celebra-
tion parade? Sandy Murphy led a
committee to make that big celebra—
tion a reality. The parade started
around 4 pm. and marched across
the Harstine Island Bridge and met
at the community hall. It was a great _
day.
I don’t know how to start this
paragraph as I think it is going to
be my last paragraph for the Harst—
ine Island article in the Journal. As
many of you know, Judy and I have
sold our log home. We have been
renting and waiting for the right
home to become available here on the
island. However, life has thrown us a
mer of my youth there and most of
my adult life Visiting. The family
home has been passed down to my
brother. Well, the property right next
to him became available and with the
encouragement all of our family we
decided to buy it. We are now only
minutes away from our kids and a
few steps away from my brother.
It will be tough — very tough —
to leave Harstine Island. Judy and
I have so many memories of great
times with so many great friends
here. And hopefully we can add to
those memories as we plan on coming
back as often as we can.
I have greatly enjoyed writing this
article over the past 12 years and I
will miss doing that.
ent hall endures.
There is a conceptual drawing of
what the new hall might look like.
This drawing is just the beginning
idea and not set in stone so as we
move forward things will change as
do the island’s needs. The 2nd Cen-
tury Fund can provide you an oppor-
tunity to lay your own cornerstone
in giving future generations a place
to grow and thrive. You can do this
by making a tax—deductible donation
in most any form: cash now or leave
a donation in your will to become a
legacy donor. You can create a me—
morial to honor an islander by using
the tax status of the foundation to
reduce taxes through gifts of ap-
preciated stocks and mutual funds.
Another consideration — you may be
able to save tax dollars by contribut-
ing IRA and 401(k) funds by direct-
to the beat makes a song for the rise
of summer heat.
It looks like someone borrowed the
White canoe that was set out in the
triangle. I’m guessing that once they
got it home and put it in the water,
they noticed that it didn’t have a bot-
tom and that’s not good if you plan
to paddle in these chilly Puget Sound
waters. Michelle and Randy put the
canoe there as a decoration. Due to
suspicions that someone might want
to take it, Randy took his jigsaw and
cut two big holes in the bottom. It
was good that the canoe was only bor-
rowed and they put it back in place.
With so many events canceled here
on the island, one ongoing event has
been lost in the shuffle, the 2nd Cen-
tury Fund. The goal of this commit-
tee is to raise enough money during
the next several years so when a new
