I used to look on a chain saw as a sort of luxury, or something only
for the professional or semi-professional outdoors type who spent half
his life in hunting or camping situations.
But after pricing fireplace wood and comparing that to the low cost
and light weight of today's chain saws, I'm rethinking my position.
Even in this land where trees are on all sides, fireplace wood can be
so high priced that you can pay for a chain saw with what a few cords
would cost.
Since some of the better makes are lightweight and small in size,
you can carry one on a hunting trip without adding a lot of weight. A
chain saw will let you lay in a supply of wood for camp in an hour or so
that would take half a day or longer with a hand saw.
On one moose hunt, we were able to get a farmer's tractor in to a
moose to drag it out because we had a chain saw to cut the many
blowdowns in our way. Without it we would have had to pack that
meat out for several miles over that same forest obstacle course.
Scrap fish
One of the bad by-products of dams is that where once migratory
fish such as steelhead and salmon were abundant, scrap fish such as carp
take over.
Anyone who has spent time on the large reservoirs behind
hydroelectric dams has had this experience of seeing carp by the
hundreds of thousands.
There's almost nothing humans can do about this problem, for carp
are extremely hardy and breed prolifically. Nature, however, is possibly
coming to our help in the form of another import to this part of the
H country, the walleye.
