According to Herb Gerhardt, chairperson of the Citizen's Committee for the Establishment of Hospital District No. 2, the committee submitted their petition to the Mason County Auditor on June 15. This petition comprised 104 pages of signatures and contained a total of 820 signatures, of which the committee verified that at least 555 were valid, the number needed for validation. The petition and results will be sent to the Mason County Commission for review and another public hearing. After that hearing, the County Commissioners must submit a petition to the Mason County Supervisor of Elections to place the issue on the November General Election Ballot. The formation of Mason County Public Hospital District No. 2 will be up to the voters of the affected precincts. A simple majority is needed; however, in order to validate this election, at least forty percent of the number of voters who voted during the last general election will be required to cast a ballot. That means at least 1,496 mail-in ballots must be returned from the Belfair, Tahuya and Dewatto precincts. m Don Wilson, commissioner of Public Hospital District No. 1 of Mason County, an outstanding member of the medical community in Thurston and Mason Counties, was selected by the Business Examiner as 2007 Healthcare Champion in Support Services. Her specialty is in surgery and diseases of the eye and she brings experience in the management of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and rnacular degeneration. She also performs cataract surgery and laser procedures. "Dr. Vuong worked at the Eye Clinic as a 'locum tenens' (temporary physician), and we are delighted that she has agreed to accept a full-time position. We have received so many positive comments about the care she gave as a Iocum physician," said Terry Megiveron, clinic director for Public Hospital District No. 1. Dr. Vuong grew up in the Seattle area and received her medical degree from the University of Washington. She did her internship at the University of Massachusetts, Worcester, and her residency at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. According to Sue Barwi¢k, R.N., certified diabetes educator and coordinator of the class, "Diabetes self-management can be improved with proper knowledge and skills, and most people with diabetes can lead a healthy, active life." MGH has a team of healthcare providers that teach the class. Studies show that effective self- management of the disease is beneficial for the patient and their family. Content of the class includes diabetes diagnosis, proper meal planning, diabetes medications, exercise, prevention and treatment of complications, stress management, living with diabetes, and the use of support people and a healthcare team.
