A walk and a steal put a runner in scoring position with one out in the third, but a pair of force plays dissolved the dilemma. A single (Central's first hit) and a passed ball, with two out, posed plight in the fourth, banish- ed by a whiff; and a runner on second with one away, after a throwing .error, was eradicated by a double play when second baseman Billy Landram gloved a line drive in the fifth. Trouble tromped the base paths in the sixth, and blew Jon's bid for a shutout. He escaped with one unearned run, but see what the calamity contingency was. An opening walk was erased wren Marshall picked the run- ner off. Then Landram dropped a pop fly, Chris Thorsen singled and Brian Wright doubled off the football grandstand for the: tally and left runners on second and third with one down. Amrstrong then caught Butch Stuart look- ing at a 2-2 pitch and Randy Goakey rolled out to first. The game's heart-stopper, from a Shelton fan's standpoint, came in the final inning, With the score 2-1, Central's opening bat- ter was 230-pound Steve Okoniew- ski, Olympic League all-star tackle last fall. On a 1-1 pitch monstrous Steve smashed a line drive into dead centerfield which looked like it was bound for the seats without a doubt. But the ball was hit so hard and so low that Jan Donald- son was able to reach above the rail and glove it backhanded. It was a tremendous smash and a renlendous catch. The next 'two batters rolled weakly to the infield. Tom Thumb-sized Rob Mills banged the balls which scored Got( Fastballers • Gott Oil will be among a 12-team field competing in the fourth annual "It's The Water" Invitational Baseball Tournament this weekend at Stevens Field in Olympia. El(ion Allen gained second on his swinging bunt and a sacrifice in the thir(l, tarried as I,andram popped to the infield, then fled for the plate when Mills' roller to the shorl- stop was thrown away at first. In the sixth things were legili- mate. This time Dave Steinberg singled to center with one out and Landram bunted him down before Mills lashed a double to center. This was a tense tilt all the way, Shelton's third straight suc- cess in league play. Tonight Bremerton's Darigold squad, the only league conquorer of Shclton so far, visits Loop Field at 6:30. The Dairymen won a forfeit ver- dict when Shelton could not field a full line-up at Bremerton June 18. Sunday Shelton goes to South Kitsap, Tuesday to Central Kit- sap, and next Thursday to North End (Poulsbol. Result: two setbacks at the hands of Kclso and Kent in the 12th aroma] I.z)ngview 4th of July Invitatkmal baseball tournament. Shelton and Kelso dueled two overtime torrid innings in a dandy 1-1 pitching duel befure the big bomb burst and Kelso exploded for eight runs and a 9-1 victory at Kelso in the morn- lng ganle. It came tiffs t) close to being a 1-0 or 2-1 Shelton success in- stead. Kelso's run, for example, was unearned, on a passed ball after a bad throw on a run down had allowed the runner to reach third. In the bottom half of the same inning, the fourth, Shelton earned its run and but for fortune's frown would have had an un- earned second. Jerry Sparks drew a life as opening batter on an infield on'or. He and Jon Arm- strong wound up on second and third a nmment later on Jon's single to center, with none out. While Jan Donaldson was bat- ring a wild pitch rebounded un- usually hard off the stands and Sparks was rapped at the plate instead of scoring as he would have nine times in ten. Donald- son then singled Armstrong home. In the eighth, the first extra inning, Shelton again had runners on third and second with onne away after an error on Mary Wilson's roller and Rob Mills' double to right. Tom Marshall skied to medium centerfield far enough that. it required a per- fect throw to get Wilson. Bu! outfielder Bob Fletcher came through with that perfect peg and the run which would have won turned into a double play. Then in the ninth the heat, an ailing knee aggrivated on his test. Kent made short shrift of the first inning run Sbelhm accrued on singles by Mills and Marshall and a catcher's throwing error by tallying three times in the second, after two out, on a walk, a single and two triples. From there it degenerated into a 12-3 route. Another pair, unearned, in the second resulted froman in- field boot and two singles. Kent earned two in the fifth and was handed five in the sixth when costly errors followed two open- ing outs. Kent scored all 12 of its runs after bye were out, earned only five. Armstrong and Jan Donaldson were Shelton's bat aces for the day with three hits apiece.
