Fire station gets rating Dorene Rae seeking
Mason County Fire District provides an insurance savings to will be rated in the very ,,ear treasurer position
5, Station 10, at John's Prairie
has been recognized by the
rating bureau for an eighth-class
fire protection rating according
to Dick Knight, chief of the
district. Fire Protection District
5 was informed by the
Washington Surveying and Rating
Bureau this became effective as
of May 15, Knight said. This
the homeowner in that area in
fire insurance premiums of up to
50 percent and also a savings to
the mill industries in that area.
This will make ten stations in
District 5 which have received
this improved fire insurance
rating, the chief said.
It is anticipated that one

The Hoodsport Firehall will
be the location of one of three
open houses set by the U.S.
Forest Service this month to
provide the public an
opportunity to receive
information about and how to
provide input to the Roadless
Area Review and Evaluation
(RARE lI).
Announcement of the
meetings was made this week by
Richard Beaubien, supervisor of
Olympic National Forest.
The Hoodsport open house is
scheduled from 3-8 p.m. July 12
at the firehall.
Other open houses have been
scheduled for Port Angeles July
11 and Seattle July 25.
The National Draft
Environmental Statement was
issued on June 15 with the
public comment period ending
October 1. The open houses are
being scheduled for the purpose
of aiding the public in
understanding the RARE II
process, providing information
on the inventory and the
procedure for submitting input
to the draft statement.
The National Draft
Environmental Statement and
the Washington/Oregon
Supplement will be available at
the open houses. Data pertaining
to the RARE II inventory and
maps of the inventoried roadless
areas will be provided.
Information about RARE II
may also be obtained at all
forest service offices during
normal business hours, Monday
through Friday.
RARE II is an accelerated
portion of the forest service's
on-going land management
planning effort dealing
specifically with the roadless area
issue. The goal of RARE II is to
determine which roadless areas
are needed to help round out a
quality National Wilderness
Preservation System and which
areas could be immediately
allocated to other multiple
resource uses.
future, he said. This station is at
the south end of Harstine Island.
If this program is successful,
there will then be 11 class "8"
rated stations in District 5,
which is outstanding for a rural
fire district covering 150 square
miles, Knight said.
When this program has been
completed this will place
practically all residences and
structures within Fire District 5
within five or less miles of a
rated fire station and the vast
majority of these structures will
be within two miles of a rated
fire station.
One factor which might
present some difficulty in
accomplishing these goals is
volunteer firefighters. In order to
rate a fire station for fire
insurance rating purposes, the
district must have not only
stations and fire engines but also
volunteers of sufficient numbers
and well trained to insure an
adequate response 24 hours a
day, Knight said.
As volunteer fire fighters are
needed and are essential to the
success of any fire department,
District 5 is urging all interested
persons to come to any one of
the fire stations on a Tuesday
evening at 7 p.m. and offer their
services as volunteers. Anyone
wishing further information or
answers to their questions can
call the District 5 business office
on the biJsiness number, which is
426-5533 or 275-2889. This
phone will be answered 24 hours
a day; however, Fire District 5
does maintain normal business
hours during the day.
