In June, representatives from The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), the nation's premier healthcare quality organization, visited MGH to learn more about its successful Diabetes Wellness Center and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Services programs. These two depart- ments strive to reduce the re-admission of patients with associated chronic illnesses. "It is wonderful to see staff recognized for the great work they have done. Certainly gaining recognition from IHI is a great compliment of their work;' said Bob Appel, CEO of MGH. MGH officials participating in the visit and receiving the kudos from IHI are pictured here (front to back) - Eileen Branscome, R.N., CCO; Sue Barwick, R.N., director of the Diabetes Wellness Center; Mark Schlauderaff, M.D., diabetes education faculty member and medical director of ICU; Melissa Cuzick, R.N., director of house supervisors and staffing office and co-coor- dinator of the CHF team; and Terri Gushee, R.N., co-coordinator of the CHF team. Campus Renewal Project Construction continues around the entire MGH campus. Installation of the water retention and infiltration ponds are completed. Foundations for the new surgical wing are complete and the building pad elevation has been established. The major noise interruptions (where structure was tied into the existing building) have ceased for now- at least until the completion of the new south lobby this fall. Installation of the underground mechanical and electrical infrastructure will continue until the middle of this month. By the end of July the contractor expects to begin erecting walls. Subcontractor bidding is over 90% complete. With most of the bids received, MGH is negotiating the contractor's final construction cost. With cost savings generated by favorable bids, many additional items will be included as part of this project. Items such as adding north parking (already underway), laying new asphalt in the south parking lot, resurfacing the existing south parking area, and some finish upgrades inside the Hospital. There will not be any major work started inside the Hospital until the first part of August. The contractor is working with MGH staffto determine the best possible scheduling of interior upgrades, and the next construction update (in the August issue of SCOPE) will reveal the contractor's plans for the interior construction.
