The Shelton Elks celebrated Flag Day on June 14. The club No. 2467 is located at 741 Craig Rd. There were eight flags dis- played representing our nation's history. Each flag was presented by flag bearers form the Webelos, Cubs Scouts, Boy Scouts and the new Venture crew of Troup 110. Scout Master Matt Taylor Coordi- nated the flag order. The Elks celebrate our na- tion's Flag every June 14 as part of their charter. Exalted Ruler Mark Jaros presided and asked each officer station what was the significance of the American Flag, the Crowning Virtue, Char- ity, Justice for all, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. The chaplain led in prayer. There were eight flags as our Nation evolved. From 1620 to 1775, the flag of England represented the peoples of America. The first flag adopted was the Pine Flag in 1775 by the Colonial vessels and was the ban- ner carried by colonial forces in Elks tell the history of the U.S. flag during a gathering. The fifth flag was the "Star Spangled Ban- ner." Under this banner, the war of 1812 was fought. On Septem- ber 14, 1814 Francis Scott Key was inspired to write our national anthem, "The Star Spangled Ban- ner." The congress adopted a resolu- tion that on and after July 4, 1818 the number of stripes should be thirteen and the blue field should carry a star for each of the twenty states. A new star was to be add- ed for each state admitted. This was the sixth flag. Since 1818 there has been no change in the flag design except that twenty-eight new stars were added before July 4, 1912, and this, the seventh flag, of forty- eight stars flew over this nation for forty-seven years. The eighth flag was presented on July 4, 1959 with a star was added for Alaska, and a year later, Hawaii, added the fiftieth star. Our present flag has fifty stars and thirteen stripes.
