Burglar strikes Allyn,

At least two burglaries tar-
geting the Allyn and Grape-
view post offices that started
in late June might be linked
to a serial burglar.
“We believe there is a po-
tential connection, whether
or not it’s the same suspects
we are working to determine
that,” said John Wiegand,
public information officer for
the US. Postal Inspection ,
Service. “When we have bur-
glaries of this nature in the
same area around the same
time we always investigate
them as if they may be con-
nected.”
Wiegand said the Allyn

Grapeview resident Carla
Froome told the Herald that
her husband went to pick up
1 mail Sunday morning and
discovered more than just
their box was burglarized.
“Our mailbox was empty
except for the key (mail carri-
ers) normally put in the door
when they have packages,”
Froome said. “(Through the
door) he could see into the
back where there was a whole
lot of ripped up packages with
stuff all over.”

a new set of keys,” the email
said.
Froome said when the Ma-
son County Sherifi’s deputies
arrived Sunday morning they
“realized the door in the lobby
to the back was pried open.”
Mason County Sheriff’s Of-
fice Chief Criminal Deputy
Ryan Spurling said the coun-
ty is reviewing photos and
working alongside the US.
Postal Service to help identify
the suspects.
“We’ve had hits before on
the (post) offices, but this one
has an MD. about it,” Spu'rl-
ing said. “There has been a
string of burglaries not in
our county, but in Kitsap and
Pierce.”
Since January, burglaries
have been reported in Kitsap
County at the Southworth,
Keyport, Manchester and
Tracyton offices and in Pierce
County at the Lakebay office.
According to a report by
Q13 News, “the same man is
believed to have stolen more
than 100 packages.” _
Wiegand said it is believed
that the burglar(s) are tar-
geting packages, but if resi-
dents are missing mail that
contains identifying informa-
tion and/or receive fraudu-
lent credit card charges they
should file a police report im-
mediately. '
“Please report it even if
it’s a small charge, you never

The Postal Service is work-

sheriff’s offices to increase
law enforcement presence at
all targeted offices.
The Grapeview and Allyn
Post Offices will operate on
limited hours, from a.m. to 5
p.m. Monday through Friday
and 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Sat-
urdays until further notice.
“You get a locked post of-
fice box to feel a little more
secure,” Froome said. “And’
now we find out it’s not all
that secure.”
Wiegand said the suspects
appeared around 1 to 2 a.m.
and any suspicious activity
should be reported to law en-
forcement.
