With her kayak collecting dust
during theworkweek, North Shore
resident Pamela Sutter thought she
could give others the opportunity to
explore Hood Canal in the summer
sun.
“I was on Craigslist looking for
equipment for my car and I saw an
ad a guy posted renting his-kayak
for $45 a day,” Sutter said. “Mine
had just been sitting around, I was
thinking I could rent it out, buy a
second and eventually I had enough

and fifth.”
Hood Canal Kayak Rentals is
the newest addition to Hood Canal’s
many recreational rental business-
es.
Sutter lives in North Shore, but
offers a drop-off and pickup service
for anywhere within 45 minutes of
Belfair.
“The only place to rent around
North Shore is way out of my way
and out of my price range. I tried to
make this as affordable as possible,”
Sutter said.
The kayaks start at a rate of $15

for two hours and come in both sin-
gle and double sizes. Multiday rent-
al packages are also available. Life
jackets and individually wrapped
whistles are provided with all rent-
als.
Though she started renting kay-
aks just three weeks ago, Sutter
has received plenty of interest and
is working to expand her fleet to six
single and two double kayaks. Even-
tually, Sutter plans to purchase
some Origami Paddlers, which are
collapsible, tri-fold hybrid paddle—
boards and kayaks that can easily
be toted in the back of a car.
“Eventually I want to move my
kayaks into a wooden rack, right
now they are just lying in my drive-
way,” Sutter said. “A guy on Face—
book said he’d help me make the
rack, he’d draw the holes and every-
ti massif:
thing for free and all I’d have to do
is assemble it. People are so friendly
out here.”
Originally from Ohio, Sutter said
she came to the Northwest in search
of better weather. “(In the Midwest)
it’s really hot and humid in the sum-
mer and we usually just stay inside
with the A/C on,” Sutter said. “Ever
since I’ve lived here I’ve wanted to
get a kayak and get out.”
Though having a full-time job as
a beauty consultant for a major de-
partment store pushed outdoor rec-
reation to the back burner, Sutter is
happy to provide this affordable op-
portunity for others.
