half-days in the school library {o

Not only women are involved.
Fathers have aided in
construction and landscaping, and
they assist in sporis programs on a
regular basis. Not only parents
pa rticipate. People ofthe
community have buill and
painted, planted and ph)wed.

Mariolti. "Our school is the
center (.)f the colnlllunitv.'"
Sally Cook, co-ordinator for
voluntee~ help, stresses the
im portance t)[ the increased
individual allenlion given to each
child through Ihe program.
"The occasional learning
problem can be more readily
recognized and the child mo,e
promptly helped." she says.
Cross-age tutoring, in which
u pper classmen aid lower
classmen, has proved in Pioneer
School l• produce two-way
benefits. The tutor as well as the
tutored gains by the experience.
Nationwide levy failures have
promoted a growing trend toward
the volunteer program. Pioneer
School. however. •lUSt happens to
like it that way.
