Volunteers are gettin
historic house in ordeI
Eighteen people waded into a
mor cleanup at the McReavy
House on July 1 to prepare for
this Sunday's visit by the Mason
County Historical Society, and
help is needed for a last-minute
cleanup this Saturday at the
mansion in Union.
The cleaning and set-up day
will begin Saturday, July 14, at
noon. Anyone interested in help-
ing may call Howard and Lisa
Leggett at 898-1717 or Mike and
Lindy Fredson at 898-7714. The
117-year-old dilapidated house
and grounds, site of big plans by
some local historians, has been
neglected for years but is due
for some tender loving care.
The volunteer grounds crew
during the July 1 cleanup includ-
ed Jim Leggett and grandson
Kanye, Tim and Shawn Anstey,
Dennis Grady, Pat Grover, Hen-
ry Biernacki, Jessica Engel and
daughter Rylee, Mark Peake,
Mya Keyzers and Mike Fredson.
The group hacked away at the
overgrown landscape of Scotch
broom, vine maple, ivy and wild
rose.
The interior cleaning team of
Kathie Adams, Kathy Weber,
Lindy Fredson, Constance Ibsen
and Geri Peake worked with
brooms, mops, rags and a gen-
erator-powered vacuum cleaner.
Jean Moore brought refresh-
ments of apple juice and brown-
ies to bolster the crew's energy
levels.
Much cleaning was accom-
plished, and while many ex-
pressed an enthusiasm for an-
other cleaning session, the lack
of bathroom facilities tended to
limit working time.
The historical society will
hold its monthly meeting at
the house at 2 p.m. Sunday, Its
president, Mike Fredson, who
also heads the McReavy House
Museum of Hood Canal founda-'
tion trying to restore the build-
ing, will discuss the progress of
those efforts and talk about the
artist colony at Olympus Manor
from 1924 to 1952. The founda-
tion board is nearing final stag-
es of document preparation to
accept title of the property from
the Visser family, descer
of John McReavy, the I
land baron and logging pi
who built the house overlo
Hood Canal in 1890.
