McCleary is bearing down
Little McCleary on the other
side of the Grays Harbor County
line will bearly be able to con-
tain itself this weekend as it is
swamped with thousands of visi-
tors for its annual festival.
The McCleary Bear Festival,
featuring its famous bear stew,
will be held Friday, Saturday and
Sunday.
Queen of the fest is Kim Rush,
who has lived in McCleary since
the fifth grade and has wanted
to be a princess ever since hear-
ing that there was such an honor
to be had. "Being part of the Bear
Festival is very rewarding," she
said. "At the same time it is a lot
of work."
She will be crowned at 7 p.m. on
Friday at McCleary Elementary
School, an event to be followed by
a street dance, karaoke and a mu-
sic and light show.
Cooked up in 1958 by Norman
Porter, who at the time was the
editor of The McCleary Stimula-
tor, the Bear Festival started with
a remark by a friend of Porter's
by the name of Roy Craft, who at
the time was the editor of another
newspaper, The Skamania Coun-
ty Pioneer of Stevenson. Craft
claimed that Skamania bears, if
properly cooked, were the world's
most delicious, and Porter coun-
