The sheriffs office is responsi- ble for coordinating and Conduct- ing search and rescue operations in Mason County and the Division of Emergency Management ad- ministers the county's Emergency Worker Program. Mason County is one of 'the most favored destinations for outdoor recreation in the Pacific Northwest. It serves as a haven of relaxation and recreation with more than 900 miles of shorelines, miles of waterways and rivers and a myriad of trails in the rugged, majestic Olympic National Forest. Tens of thousands of people flock to the area during the summer. With this influx of visitors, the sheriffs office sees an increase in the number of incidents of lost, missing or injured people in the backcountry and on waterways of the county. These incidents create the need for qualified, dedicated people to volunteer to help find and rescue those who become lost and injured. THAT IS accomplished through the use of various teams of reg- istered volunteers overseen by sheriffs office search and rescue coordinators. All volunteer emer- gency workers are required to meet specific standards to be eligible for participation. The standards ensure that the county can field a team of competent and credible volunteer workers able to respond to any mission. All training beyond the basic qualifications is the responsibility of the individual volunteer. Volunteers are expected to re- spond to training and operational missions on a call-out basis with- out compensation in most cases. Volunteers are organized into teams based on their skills, inter- ests and certifications. Each team is responsible for training and maintaining the standards set forth by the sheriffs office. EACH TEAM is independently funded through donations and other fund-raising efforts. Each team sets its own training sched- ule and is responsible for team equipment. Teams maintain inde- pendent leadership with oversight from the sheriffs office. Examples of the search and rescue units needed or currently operating in Mason County in- clude: ground search unit, Explor- er search and rescue, mobile and off-road vehicle search and rescue, tracking, equestrian search and rescue, communications, base op- erations, dive and swift-water op- erations and search dogs.
