The Mason County Sheriffs Of-

and rescue team.
The sheriffs office is responsi-
ble for coordinating and Conduct-
ing search and rescue operations
in Mason County and the Division
of Emergency Management ad-
ministers the county's Emergency
Worker Program.
Mason County is one of 'the
most favored destinations for
outdoor recreation in the Pacific
Northwest. It serves as a haven
of relaxation and recreation with
more than 900 miles of shorelines,
miles of waterways and rivers and
a myriad of trails in the rugged,
majestic Olympic National Forest.
Tens of thousands of people flock
to the area during the summer.
With this influx of visitors, the
sheriffs office sees an increase in
the number of incidents of lost,
missing or injured people in the
backcountry and on waterways of
the county. These incidents create
the need for qualified, dedicated
people to volunteer to help find
and rescue those who become lost
and injured.
THAT IS accomplished through
the use of various teams of reg-
istered volunteers overseen by
sheriffs office search and rescue
coordinators. All volunteer emer-
gency workers are required to meet
specific standards to be eligible
for participation. The standards
ensure that the county can field
a team of competent and credible
volunteer workers able to respond
to any mission.
Volunteers are registered as
emergency workers and those
meeting the requisite standards
will be eligible for response to mis-
