"The Beavers are real popular," he said. "Nevada is tempting because I know the quarterback who just (verbally) committed. I played with him at the WSU camp and they thought we'd played together before be- cause I could read his mind. he could read mine. They think we'll be a great re- cruitment class." Right now. Ajamu said his third choice is Portland State. "It would be nice to go to the south to play for a top school in the SEC, but it would be nice to be close to home for visits," Ajamu said. "If I get an offer from an SEC school, it'd be a hard decision to make." While the 3.0 GPA stu- dent said he's not sure what he'd like to study in college yet. he said he definitely wants to continue his educa- tion. Right now, he's think- ing about majoring in busi- ness management, athletic training or perhaps becom- ing a coach. Ajamu said he is looking forward to his final season as a Highclimber. "I think the new offense we have is really good," he said. "We've got three strong running backs and our quarterback can throw a baseball about 80 mph. We have a lot of returners, too." He said the Highclimbers will be running a power and boot offense in the fall. "I think we'll do better than last year," Ajamu said. "Every year we get better and better." He said that he plans to pack on pounds and increase his speed and s~rength while in college in the hopes of some day joln'- ing the NFL. Although the Lake Cushman Golf Course does not have a restaurant, like oth- er courses in the county, Kliese said snacks and beverages are available and that some food, such as hot dogs and sandwiches, is sold as well. The course has a full-length driving range, a tennis court and a large putting green and though there is not a head golf professional always at the club, Kliese said local golf pros are available for lessons by appointment. "There's a practice sand bunker, too. so you can practice sand shots," Kliese said "We also have a fleet of very well-main- tained Yamaha golf carts." Throughout the summer, the course is hosting four golf tournaments. The Lake Cushman Ladies' Invitational is set for 9 a.m.. July 18. The Fried Bread Golf Tournament -- a fundraiser for the Su- san G. Koman 3-Day Walk for the Cure -- is scheduled for 8 a.m.. July 28. At noon on Aug. 17 is the Couples Scram- ble Tournament to raise funds for paving cart paths. Finally, at 9 a.m. Aug. 25, the course is Weather-permitting, Lake Cushman Golf Course is open 12 months a year and during the summer, the course offers a Monday and Tuesday special. Until Oct. 31. two golfers and one cart for 18 holes will cost $40 on Mondays and Tuesdays, a sav- ing of $15. The course also has four golf clubs. The nine-hole mens' group golfs every Friday while the 18-hole mens' group every Thurs- day. The nine-hole ladies' group golfs every Tuesday and the 18-hole ladies' group every Wednesday. ~ ,~ "We also do a couples scramble every Monday at 4:30." Kliese said. "We match couples with another couple so that, nor- mally, nobody plays with the same couple twice so you get to meet a lot ofpeopte in the Lake Cushman area." Highclimbers host youth football clinic STAFF REPORT The Shelton football staff and players are hosting the sixth annual Shelton Youth Football Skills Clinic this month. From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., July 23-26, the Highclimb- ers' clinic will run at the Oakland Bay Junior High practice field. The clinic is open to all youths, second through eighth grades, who are look- ing to improve their football skill set: stances, catching, blocking, throwing, etc. The clinic is non-padded and cleats are recommended.
