Hood Canal West:
Lake Cushman group elects officers at meeting
By VIRGINIA REIS
The Lake Cushman
Improvement Association elected
new officers on Sunday• They
are president, Hank Gruden;
vice-president, Doris Micklin;
treasurer, Joe Hudson; secretary,
Dottle Holhes; and members of
the board of trustees, Jan
Chamell, Vi Leonard and Ray
Ellyson.
There was a very large
turnout at the meeting in
anticipation of an opportunity to
Senior skills exchange
program is started
Starting July 1 the Mason
and Thurston Community Action
Council will bern coordination
of a senior skills exchange.
Working on the principal of
bartering, the skills exchange will
enable seniors in the
Mason-Thurston County area to
share their resources with each
other.
Examples of skills to
exchange are bookkeeping, auto
repair, beekeeping, gardening,
baking, reading, quilting,
carpentry, sewing,
companionship, counseling,
exchanging book, records and
tools, fixing appliances, teaching
music, painting, shopping
assistance, preparing tax returns,
transportation, yard work,
writing letters, weaving, catering
or whatever skills the senior
person may have to offer.
To request a skill, call the
Mason and Thurston Community
Action Council at 352-9910
(Olympia) or 426-9726
(Shelton). They will attempt to
match the request with a skilled
person available to do the job.
The skilled senior doing the
job will be credited with the
number of hours expended.
He/she is then encouraged to call
on the exchange for desired
services. Seniors who have used
the exchange are encouraged to
donate a like amount of hours in
skills that someone else may use.
The services are free of
charge. For more information,
call MTCAC at 352-9910 or
426-9726.
meet and talk with the guest
speaker, Ben Clifford, president
of the Lake Cushman
Corporation. He discussed
matters of concern to the
residents and cleared up a
number of questions and
misapprehensions.
The Cushman Volunteer Fire
Department Auxiliary has been
expanded to include Joan and
Hank Gruden, Margaret Bibbee,
Rozell Brown, Evalyn Ellyson,
Bob Holmes and Eunice Orud.
The auxiliary is planning a
rummage sale in the Hoodsport
Community Hall the third
weekend in August. Property
owners, be sure to save
everything suitable for the event.
The fire department needs you.
In answer to the many
inquiries about Dr. B.B. Forman
of Potlatch, following his
accident last week, we are happy
to make this report. He has been
transferred back to Mason
General Hospital with very
favorable doctors' reports. The
fact that the hospital staff says
he is acting very ornery and
cantankerous seems to show he
is well on the road to recovery.
July 18 the Healthmobile
will be in Hoodsport at the
Community Hall from 9:30 a.m.
to 3 p.m. No appointments are
necessary. Come in if you have
health questions. Tests are
available for diabetes, anemia,
TB, high blood pressure, cancer
(including Pap smears),
glaucoma, VD, emphysema,
bronchitis, some vision and
hearing problems, and family
planning.
Newcomers to this area, and
even some who've been here a
while, need to register to vote.
June Fredrickson, whose phone
number is 877-5856, is
registering voters in her home in
Hoodsport. Call her now before
you forget. She'll give you the
easy directions to find her, and
then your voice will be heard on
election day.
The Lake Cushman Fire
District No. 18 monthly meeting
will be July 19 at 7:30 p.m. at
the Cushman sales office.
Co-chairmen of the annual
antique show at St. David's
Episcopal Church in Shelton are
Joan and Hank Gruden, who live
on the Lake Cushman golf
course. The Grudens just
returned from a trip east to visit
Joan's family and are now deep
into plans and preparations for
the antique show on August 3
and 4.
