If you're thinking of buying
a new oyster knife, forget it.
All public tidelands have
been closed to oyster gathering
for personal use as of last
Saturday by the State
Department of Fisheries.
The closure will last until
September 16. It was ordered to
protect oysters from harvest
during a crucial phase of their
reproductive cycle.
The closure does not prohibit
the harvesting of oysters by
owners of private tidelands.
SOUTH SHORE
CABIN BURNS
An early-morning blaze last
Wednesday destroyed an
unoccupied cabin on South
Shore Road three miles west of
Belfair.
Eight Belfair fire volunteers
responded with three engine
trucks and a tanker to the 12:11
a.m. alarm at the one-bedroom
cabin. They finished their
mop-up two hours later.
Firemen blamed the blaze on
an electrical malfunction.
Neighbors said they heard
"cracking and popping" before
the fire was reported.
Esther Day of Bremerton is
reportedly the owner.
Last Thursday's minus tide revealed a moss-covered beach
in a small cove on Pickering Passage.
