Port to sign lease with Aero Control
By NATALIE JOHNSON
Commercial jets are coming back to the
Port of Shelton this summer - they'll just
be in pieces.
On Wednesday the Port of Shelton signed
a lease with Aero Controls Inc, an airplane
parts supplier.
Aero Controls won't be leasing an air-
plane hanger as one might assume - they
already have a 75,000 square foot ware-
house on Dayton Airport Road. Instead the
company will lease just one acre of fenced-
in land from the port where the company
plans to disassemble out of use Boeing 737
airplanes.
"If you think about an automobile wreck-
ing yard, it's just like that but airplanes,"
port executive director John Dobson said.
Just like cars, planes can get too many
"miles" or cycles, as they're called in the avi-
ation world. When that happens, many of
the parts, especially radios and engines, on
the plane are still salvageable, Dobson said.
Aero Controls will disassemble the planes,
and move the sellable parts to their Dayton
Airport Road warehouse.
Aero Controls had space at the port pre-
viously, from 1992-1998, Dobson said, and
dismantled 45 Boeing 727s in that time.
"I remember years ago I could see the air-
planes on the ground when I flew over," he
said.
In 2009, Aero Controls almost signed
a similar lease with the port, but it fell
through due to lack of demand for the 727
parts. Staffing at their warehouse also had
to be cut back, Dobson said.
While the lease is only for an acre of land
at the port, Dobson said that the agreement
would bring jobs to the area.
"They will start hiring a few people to
help with the teardowns, and not just the

teardowns but making that warehouse fully
operational," Dobson said.
Aero Controls fenced in the acre covered
in the lease, which will cost the standard
port land lease rate of $350 per month plus
a $44.94 leasehold, Dobson said. Because
the lease is under $2,000 per month, the
Port of Shelton Commissioners do not need
to sign off on the lease.
On Wednesday, Aero Controls flew in a
Boeing 737-300 jet, the first to be disman-
tled at the port under the new lease.

they'll be there next month, next year, as they've been
there for millions of people for over 60 years."
