Guy "Steve" Morris
Lp_
Guy "Steve" Morris, age 81, died at Shclton
Health and Rehab Center in Shclton, Washington,
on Thursday, June 30, 2011. He was a resident
of Union, Washington for 63 years.
Born August 26, 1929, in Golden Valley
North Dakota, to Arma Chase Morris
and Guy Morris, Steve was raised in Naches,
Washington and Oak Creek, Washington near
the present day Elk Feeding Station• Steve and
his family moved to Mason County in 1946 where
he attended Irene S. Reed High School. Steve
married Donna Whitaker of Shelton, Washington on
July 3, 1948 at Sbelton's First Baptist Church. The couple
eventually had four children: Colin, Merle, Casey, and Maureen.
During Steve's younger years, he worked as an equipment operator for Buck
Mountain Logging Company and the United States Forrest Service at the Hoodsport
Station. He was later contacted by Lake Cushman Development to build the roads
for that community. After completing the Cushman project, Steve worked for the
Simpson T'nnber Company in Sheiton, and at Camp Grisdale, Camp Govey, and
Camp One Operations. Steve eventually went into business for himself as a log
.track owner and operator until he retired in 1993.
Steve was a mambe of the First Baptist Church in Shelton, Washington. He also
served as a fimfighter with Fire District 6 in Union for many years, and eventually as
the Fire Chief for several years.
While Steve enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, gardening, camping.
clam digging, and all of his many farm animals over the years, his greatest love was
his family. Simply stated, Steve loved his family more than anything, and always
wanted to be surrounded by them. From camping at the Simpson Cahpgrounds at
Mason Lake to hunting and fishing in the Olympics to working in his wood shop,
Steve included his family in almost everything he did.
Steve also enjoyed music and was able to play the keyboard and organ by ear. In
fact, his wife Donna got to the point where she wouldn't let Steve go to the Puyallup
Fair because he always wanted to upgrade his organ to the next best model. He
loved to listen to anyone thatplayed, always putting in his request for an oldie. If he
had the chance he would grab Donna and whirl her around the dance floor.
It is agreed by all of Steve's grandchildren and greabgrandchildren that "Sampa
Steve" (as he was called by some of his great-grandchildren) was the best grandpa
in the world. He will be remembered by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren
for ontimes picking them up from school and taking them to lunch or on a hunting
trip. Whenever a new grandbaby arrived he always said, "Now that is a 'keeper!'"
Steve was preceded in death by his mother and father, his mother-in-law Hazel
Whitaker, his father-in-law Kenneth Whitaker, and his sister-in-law Myma Aitken.
He is survived by his wife Donna Morris of Union, his son Colin Morris (Jamie)
of Oakville, his daughter Merle Smotherman (Jack) of Shelton, his son Casey
Morris (Shelley) of Union, his daughter Maurecn Glenn (John) of Shelton, 14
grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, his brothers-in-law RoUy Aitken, Kenneth
"Jiggs" Whitaker, and Gerald Whitaker, his sisters-in-hw Carrie LaPointe and
Nancy Whitaker, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews,
A memorial service will be held a't 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19th at the First Baptist
C'm'ch in Shelton, Washington.
