Archie Gilbert
Ellis A. "Archie" Gilbert Jr., a
tbrmer Grapeview resident and
one of the founders of the Grape-
view fire department, died on June
16 in Bremerton. He was 86.
tle was born
in Illinois and
lived in New
York City before
moving to Seat-
tle as a child. He
attended West
Queen Anne Ele-
mentary School,
Queen Anne
High School and
the University of Archie
Washington. Gilbert
He joined the
Navy and served during World
War II. After the war, he lived
in Grapeview and worked at the
Island Belle Grape Juice family
business on Stretch Island.
Mr. Gilbert moved to North Hol-
lywood, California, and worked for
a movie camera manufacturer,
selling cameras to film studios.
He returned to Seattle and be-
gan a career with the Blue Star
Steamship Line, succeeding his
fhther as general manager. He
moved the firm's main office to
San Francisco, California, living
there until he retired in 1978. He
then moved to a home overlooking
ttood Canal and lived there for the
rest of his life.
He was a world traveler who
enjoyed the best accommodations
and food. "They made first class for
someone. I figure it was for me," he
often said.
He enjoyed Smithsonian trips
on the riverboat Delta Queen,
woodworking, gardening, dancing,
musicals, painting and golf. He
loved his family and friends. He
was a member of the Rotary and
Elks, Phi Delta Theta fraternity,
Washington Athletic Club and
Mount Moriah Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by
son Ellis A. Gilbert III and Patsy
Brown, his sweetheart of many
years.
Surviving are daughter Linda
Gilbert Milam; grandchildren
Amy, Donny, Belle and Abby
Helnore, Matt, Sarah and Joshua
Williams and David Milam; sis-
ter Betty Denton; niece Becky
Bumgarner; and nephews Jack
and Dan Denton.
A private service was held.
Lynne Schinnell
Carol Lynne Schinnell of Hood-
sport died on Monday, July 16.
She was 65.
She and her husband, Walter
Schinnell, were married for 46
years. They enjoyed bowling, golf-
ing, camping and salmon fishing.
She was preceded in death by
her parents and in-laws and sev-
eral uncles and aunts.
Surviving are husband Walter
Schinnell of Hoodsport; son Eric
Schinnell of Bonney Lake; daugh-
ter Laurie Unger and husband
Bob of Lacey; brother Denny For-
gey and wife Nancy of Tacoma;
uncles Carl Troupe and wife Kay
of" Union and Gordon Forgey of
Graham; and aunt Pat Forgey of
Graham.
Also surviving are niece Ta-
mara Elway and' husband Tim of
Tacoma; nephew Bryan Forgey

Nancy Vrahnos
Longtime Union resident Nancy
A. (Burdick) Vrahnos died of can-
cer on July 13 in Shelton. She was
77 and had lived in Union for 53
years.
She was born
on August 11,
1929 in Long
Beach, Cali-
fornia, to Earl
Burdick and Es-
ther Holbrook.
She gradu-
ated from Ana-
heim High
School and at-
tended Fullerton
Junior College.
She went on to
nursing school Nancy
and worked at Vrahnos
Camarillo State
Hospital in Los Angeles.
She moved to Washington State
in 1952 and married Raymond
Vrahnos in 1954. He preceded her
in death in 1961.
Mrs. Vrahnos worked at Hood
Canal School as a teacher's assis-
tant and librarian. After retiring,
she substituted and tutored stu-
dents in reading at the school.
She loved to play and teach pi-
ano, garden and watch the Mari-
ners.
Surviving are children Chris and
Nick Vrahnos of Shelton, George
Vrahnos of Union, Stacy Impey
of Dewatto, Kathy Wilkowski of
Grapeview and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held
at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, at
Hood Canal Community Church,
81 North Finch Creek Road, Hood-
sport. Pastor Jack Keith will offici-
ate. Interment will be at Shelton
Memorial Park.

Jerry Eagle
Gerald "Jerry" Eagle, a former
Shelton resident, died on July 5 at
his home in Bremeton. He was 79.
He was born on August 1, 1927
in Shelton to Hazzie and Susie
Eagle, the flih of their nine chil-
dren.
He entered the Merchant Ma-
rine in 1946, then enlisted in the
Air Force and was honorably dis-
charged in 1949.
He later moved to Los Angeles,
California, and attended Life Bible
College in 1957.
After many years in California,
Mr. Eagle returned to Washing-
ton State, where he lived until his
death.
Surviving are son John Eagle
of Shelton; daughters Jenny Cor-
diner of Astoria, Oregon, Susan
Johnson of Torrance, California,
and Julie Creighton of Corona,
California; sister Anita Nault; and
brother Wentz Eagle of Shelton.
A memorial service was held on
Saturday, July 14, at Christian
Life Center in Port Orchard.

Gerald Shaffer died of ongoing
health problems on Wednesday,
July 11, at his home in Southwest
Mason County. He was 75.
He was born on February 20,
1932 to Merle F.
and Florence M.
Shaffer in Taco-
ma. He attended
school in Monte-
sano.
He was a jack
of all trades and
there wasn't
much he couldn't
master when it
came to mechan-
ics, his family
said. He spent Gerald
time as a diesel Shaffer
mechanic, wood-
worker, welder, machinist and
heavy equipment operator.
He was an active participant
in his class reunions in Montesa-
no and was also a member of the
Moose and Eagles lodges.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, a son and a brother.
Surviving are daughter Diane
Lee Bettine and husband Gary of
Mason County; brothers Jack E.
Shaffer of Montesano and Melvin
Shaffer of Sumner; sisters Bev-
erly Sellers of Seattle and Diana
Seales of Rohnert Park, Califor-

Clarissa McGuire
Former Shelton resident Clar-
issa Ruth McGuire died on July 7
at Wesley Homes in Des Moines,
where she lived for the past 13
years. She was 91.
She was born on February 19,
1916 in Dodon, Montana, to Ray-
mond and Clara Lindeke. She
graduated from Garfield High
School in Seattle.
She married Melvin O. McGuire
in 1936 in Seattle. They were mar-
ried 58 years. He preceded her in
death in 1994.
Mrs. McGuire was a housewife
and sometime secretary.
The McGuires lived in Brinnon
for 11 years and built two homes
on Hood Canal on property they
bought from Mrs. McGuire's fa-
ther. Her family said those Hood
Canal years were probably the
happiest times of their lives to-
gether.
They also lived in Shelton, Se-
attle, Washington, D.C., Havre
and Opheim, Montana, Olympia,
Medford and Wilsonville, Oregon.
She loved traveling, gardening,
classical music, opera and visiting
friends and family.

David Arnold Whobrey died on
Sunday, July 15, in Shelton from
service-related wounds dating
back to the Vietnam War. He was
57 and had lived in Shelton for
seven years.
He served two tours of duty in
Vietnam and was wounded during
one of them. The injury eventually
confined him to a wheelchair.
He was born on May 17, 1950 in
Tacoma to Robert and Betty (Ar-
nold) Whobrey.
He was an E-4 at the time of his
discharge from the Army.
He married Linda Bernhardt on
August 13, 1994 in Tacoma.
He enjoyed fishing, reading
western novels, computers and
playing a computer golf game,
camping and traveling in the U.S.
He was a member of the ABATE
motorcycle group and the Para-
lyzed Veterans of America.
Surviving are wife Linda Who-
brey of Shelton; daughter Mandy
Whobrey of Tacoma; three step-
daughters and one stepson; broth-
er Brad Whobrey of Tacoma; sister

Nevada mountains. She married Allen Bacon in Carson
NV and always said that her life began when she married
len. The measure of their years together has been
love, devotion, sharing and nurturing each other. A

She spent several years being active in the Grange in
county and state levels. She was a member of Harstine
Grange since in 1975 were she held the office of' Secretary
25 years and held other offices within the Grange. She h

er committees.
She is survived by her husband Allen Bacon of Harstine '.
land, son Rick of Anchorage, Alaska, daughter Linda
of Shelton, WA, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren
