Local winery claims the gol,(t:
County fair wine winners named
For the second year running,
Shelton's Walter Dacon Winery
took the lone gold medal in Mason
County Fair wine competition.
Attenders at the fair won't get
to watch judges sampling the nu-
merous wine entries from Wash-
ington wineries, 15 of which are
represented among the winners
of medals in the competition. That
tasting and judging was accom-
plished July 8 at Travaglione's
Italian Restaurant in Shelton, ac-
cording to the thir's wine superin-
tendent, Jim Culligan.
Judges were Lenny Young, wine
director for the Water Street Cafe
in Olympia; Bob Bently, a wine ed-
ucator; Diane Bently, wine writer
for the Northwest Press; and John
Cruse, world-class chef and food
director for the Mason General
Hospital.
Culligan has more than 25
years experience in the wine busi-
ness and currently teaches the
finer points of wines and the wine
business at Olympic College. The
wines in competition, Culligan
said, were judged and awarded

appearance, aroma, acidity, sugar,
flavor, finish and general quality.
Last year's competition yielded
14 medals. This year's fair brought
in a good deal more competition,
but local winemakers Lloyd "Andy"
and Ann Anderson of Walter Da-
con and Dick and Peggy Patterson
of Hoodsport Winery claimed eight
of the 31 medals awarded. Medal
winners included:
