Page 2 - Belfair Herald section of the Shelton-Mason County Journal -Thursday, July 19, 2007 Support fire distri00 ° l ti per retir, d upeO calve cenlJ t Editor, The Herald: As president of the Haven Lake Property Owners Association, which has more than 400 property owners, I and my board of direc- tors fully support the funding measure for Mason County Fire District 2 which encompasses an area of approximately 100 square miles. Although we cannot speak for all property owners in our associa- tion, many are keenly aware of the importance of having the Collins Lake Fire Station permanently staffed. As you are well aware the popu- lation is increasing in the Tahuya lakes area. Many of our current residents have reached their senior years and when medical emergen- cies occur for them, time is usually of the essence. The four- to five- minute trip from the Collins Lake Fire Station as opposed to the 12- to 13-minute trip from Belfair can mean the difference between liv- ing and dying (response times are an estimate and calculated to the south end of Haven Lake using a non-emergency vehicle). Fast medical response for the Tahuya lakes area is one of the aspects of the importance of the Collins Lake Fire Station. Also, during the dry season the danger of fire in the Tahuya lakes forest area can be high and a quick re- sponse by firefighting personnel not only is essential it is critical. A five-minute response time as opposed to a 13-minute response can mean the difference between a small burn area and an out of control situation. The upcoming funding measure will also allow the fire district to replace vehicles and eliminate the need for a fu- ture bond. The bond that was passed by voters in 1999 this year costl erty owners 18 cents per $1,{ assessed property valuation, a $40,000 assessed property that works out to $7.20 That bond will be December of 2007. The funding, measure will be ed with an increase of 15 $1,000 of assessed property ation which is a reduction percent (with a $40,000 ass i property value it works out $6 p.er year). This proposed ing measure, in our opinion, d save lives and property, a mbney well spent.
