Public Health, presented the re-
sults of the county's measurements
of fecal coliform and nutrients
on the Hood Canal shoreline. Fe-
cal coliform was measured on the
west shoreline of Hood Canal from
north of Hoodsport to Potlatch and
several problems were identified
and corrected. Fecal coliform mea-

results of the Annas Bay Pollu-
tion Identification and Correction
program. This activity covers the
east shoreline of Annas Bay and
the Skokomish Flats as well as
the shoreline in Union. Several
problems have been identified, dye
tests conducted and septic systems
repaired or replaced. The presence
of inspection in the area is raising
awareness of the problems. One
significant site in Union was cor-
rected and there is a possibility of
wildlife contamination in another
location in the populated area.
The results of the ambient wa-
ter quality measurements in the
freshwater rivers and streams were
presented. Based on the measure-
ments from October 2003 through
June 2007, Potlatch Creek, Finch
Creek, Little Mission Creek, Big
Mission Creek, Belfair Creek, the
Union River and the Skokomish
River at Highway 101 do not meet
the required water standards for
Class AA surface water. The other
18 monitoring stations of rivers
and creeks do meet the standards.
Dan Hannafious of the Hood Ca-
nal Salmon Enhancement Group
presented the status of the Big
and Little Mission creek studies.
The results show that there are
high fecal coliform measurements
at some times of the year in both
streams. There is very little pollu-
tion and flow in the upper end of
Big Mission Creek and more de-
tailed measurements will be made
in the lower area to determine the
sources. There is some question of
the flow rates in the lower end of
the creeks as some loss of water is
occurring between stations.
The next meeting of the Lower
Hood Canal Watershed Coalition
will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Au-
gust 6, in the North Mason School
District boardroom. The main sub-
ject of the meeting will be the Hood
