Mariners make a fan out of me
I sat on the
wall at Safeco
Field after the
Mariners de-
feated the Texas
Rangers 7-0 on
Saturday. For
several minutes
after the game
"Mariners Win"
flashed around
the stadium.
Couresy of Jamie Hanson
took 26 years, but the Seattle
Mariners finally managed to make
a fan last weekend.
I was one of the lucky recipients
of amazing seats for the Mariners vs.
Rangers game on Saturday when my
boss gave away tickets in the fifth row
of section 141, which is close to third
base.
Since I haven't been to a Mariners
game since high school, I was excited
for the experience, but not expecting
much from the team. Let's face it,
since 2001 when they won 116 games,
the Mariners haven't been all that
great.
After arriving at the stadium and
discovering how close to the field
the seats were, my excitement rose
remarkably. The last game I went
to, I had nosebleed section seats and
watching from so far up isn't nearly as
much fun.
I was impressed by the team in
the first inning, at the end of which
the Mariners were up 4-0 over the
Rangers, who beat them 3-2 the night
before.
The~second and third innings were
pretty much what I usually expect
from professional baseball. Then
catcher John Jaso hit a home run in
the bottom of the fourth inning and I
started paying closer attention.
I noticed how seamlessly the Mari-
ners were playing together and how
soundly they were
shutting the Rangers
out.
In fact, pitcher Fe-
lix Hernandez struck
out 12 batters and
allowed just three
hits, which is pretty
impressive. It was
By EMILY impressive to me, at
HANSON least.
Though Jaso's
home run was the
most exciting play of the game for me,
it was an all-around great game and
the most fun I've had watching base-
ball since I saw "A League of their
Own" the first time when I was about
10.
Although the most fun part of the
game for me was interacting with the
people sitting around me -- every man
there agreed to gallantly jump in front
of the ball if it came toward my sister
or me -- it was also surprisingly fun
to just sit back and enjoy a baseball
game. Since I'm working at all of the
games I go to in Mason County, I don't
usually get to just enjoy them for what
they are.
I'll probably never have seats that
close to the action again, but I would
gladly pay for nosebleed seats, gas to
and from Seattle and high-priced food
if it meant seeing the Mariners in per-
son again.
