kill the small clams; (3) dirt and
rocks taken when the hole was
dug and piled nearby will
suffocate clams underneath; and
(4) if the hole fills with silt or
other debris, clams will not set
(spawn) there again.
This problem can be reduced
by expanding an existing hole in
the direction where the most
clams are found. Digging then
becomes a continuous backfill
process which causes little
damage to the undug beach.
Another way to combat the
problem is to dig just one hole
and then fill it once the clams
have been taken.
KEEP WATER SAFE
During the summer season, people take to the
water in huge numbers, and accident figures reflect it.
Swimming pools and beaches are fun, of course, but
can be hazardous to the careless or unwary. Near
droWniings, jellyfish stings, cuts from glass, eye
abrions from windblown snnd-all may require t
physichm's treatment.
Everyone, especially children, should be aware of
proper safety rules. Young children should never be
permitted to swim unsupervised-no matter how well
they claim to be able to swim.

Crime Prevention Tips:
Engraver for heavy
equipment available
By DIMITRI TODD, Crime Prevention Officer
Mason County Sheriff's Department
Grange members and persons living in rural areas who own and
operate farm or heavy-duty equipment will be interested in knowing
that the Crime Prevention Unit now has an extra-heavy-duty
arc-welding-type engraver which may be used to mark their
equipment in accordance with the Operation Identification program.
The engraver operates off a regular l lO-volt house electrical
system and can be regulated to effect different degrees of depth. The
engraver was recently furnished by the Attorney General's Crime
Watch Division and Mason County is one of the first to receive this
type of engraver.
Clubs, groups and organizations who are looking for new and
interesting programs might be interested in the recent 18.minute slide
presentation entitled "Outsmarting Crime," An Older Person's Guide
to Safer Living. This slide show was just recently produced by the
Crime Watch Division and shows some of the many things the older
citizen can do to help prevent crime from occurring within their
neighborhood and to themselves.
Persons interested in obtaining the engraver or having a slide
presentation may do so by calling the Mason County Sheriff's
Department, Crime Prevention Unit, 426-9766 or 275-2844, and a
time will be scheduled.
