In Manke Round Robin
Local bats overwhelm sparingly
Two Shelton men's fastpitch
teams made less than auspicious
showings last weekend in the
first annual Manke's Round
Robin Tournament at Callanan
Park.
Host club Manke's could
manage only two wins and a tie
in six outings against teams from
around the Northwest. That was
good for fourth place among
seven clubs.
The only other local
participant, Shelton's Day and
Sons, lost all six of its games and
took the cellar position.
Ruth Realty of Seattle and
Smokey's of Vancouver,
Washington proved the big guns,
Ruth winning with six victories
against nary a defeat and
Smokey's losing only to Ruth.
Third place went to Seaboard
Construction of Seattle, fifth to
Graber Insurance of Everett and
sixth to Branding Iron and
Molette of Seattle.
Here's the story as far as the
local clubs' action:
In game one, Manke beat
Day and Sons 4-1 on a Clyde
Rains three-hitter. Manke hits
were by Elmer Herrel, Err
Herrel, Mike Bariekman, Duane
Makoviney and Terry Knight
(two).
Day and Sons fielded the
following players: AI Brotche,
Jim Johansen, Jim Bianchi, Gary
Orey, Roy West, Tracy West,
Phil Adams, Lee Devaney, Ron
Jonker and Ken Dickinson.
Bianchi's double and Corey's two
singles constituted the team's
only hits.
Later, Manke met and tied,

first of three tournament home
runs in the contest, and
Makoviney went two for four
and drove in the other run.
Day and Sins next fell 2-9 to
Seaboard and then 1-10 to Ruth
Realty. In the second game,
against the eventual champs,
Brotche had two doubles and a
single and Bianchi and Adams
both singled.
Manke's encounter with
Seaboard ended on a sour note
for the local men, a 3-7 defeat.
But the score was really not

Slowpitch invite draws top talent
Five local men's slowpitch
teams demonstrated competency,
if not actual dominance, last
weekend in the second annual
Shelton Slowpitch Invitational
Round Robin Tournament at
both Loop and MCRA fields.
While City League member
SRA's 5-3 third-place
performance was tops among the
local clubs, and the bottom
rungs of the ladder were choked
with Sheltonians, the third-year
league did manage to land several
of its players on the tournament
all-star squad.
They are Bob Fitzpatrick of
