Tuesday, )n's played its pants on - succeeded. enduring five straight less outings since donning ir brand-new knickers, istmastown's American baseball team finally them with a victory - what a victory it was. apital, the league's leader, y by a 3-2 count. the host team's first-ever victory over the Olympia ), which this year took the spot in the state 1 school championships "We were beginning to think maybe going back to the pants if we didn't get a win too much longer," ghed Shelton Manager Bill after Tuesday's big win, pulled the home team up the middle of the standings about a month to go in action. .Capital struck first with a of runs in the second inning Shelton starter Marty )bson, who'd allowed only hit previously. The big blow a ground-rule double by Shelton drew within a run.in bottom of the third when Lindberg got on, on an error, Benny Ward singled him to second and then Jim O'Dell cracked a run-scoring double. O'Dell, who had come on to pitch in the third, cruised along on the mound with a no-hitter and had everything under control until two outs were recorded in the sixth inning. He then walked three straight Capital batters to load the bases before getting the last out on a harmless infield pop-up. In the Shelton half of that inning, O'Dell singled, catcher Kevin Ridout bunted to sacrifice him to second, Les Smith got on on an error and then Jim Tobin "laid down one of the prettiest bunts you've seen," as Manager Valley put it, to squeeze home the tying run. After Tobin, who'd come in to relieve pitcher O'Dell, got Capital in order in the top of the seventh, Shelton proceeded to put together another clutch offensive performance. First Lindberg drew a walk. Ward again singled him around into scoring position. Then, with victory a stroke away, O'Dell rapped out his third hit, a high, bounding single through the middle of the infield, and Lindberg scampered home with the winning run. Valley was particularly high JIM O'DELL'S pitching and hitting keyed Shelton's big victory. on the clutch performances of Tobin, whose big bunt proved the equalizer and whose relief work earned him a mound victory; and on batters Ward, O'Dell and Smith, in particular. Ward had a pair of singles, O'Dell two singles and a double and Smith a single and a double. "And I just can't say enough about the excellent coaching strategy by (assistants) Jim Tobin (Sr.),and Ken O'Dell," he added. "That squeeze play was a beauty and came at just the right tinle." in addition to pitching four full innings of no-hit ball, O'Dell also fanned five Capital batters. Over the weekend Shelton lost its only games in the Hoquiam Invitational, a seven-team tournament eventually won by the Legion team from Moscow, Idaho. Stone's of Seattle took Shelton 9-2 in the first game and then, despite the one-hit performance by pitcher Tobin in the second game, Shelton fell 1-2 to the Lacey Giants to cut short its participation. This evening at 8:30 Shelton will take on Parkland in Tacoma. The next home stand is doubleheader this Saturday at p.m. against Lacey. ristrnastown Racing Assn. promo: celess drag racing Saturday All the visual excitement of racing, but without the noise lhe high speeds, will be to the streets of Sheltofi occasion is a promotional of various dragsters, race and drivers courtesy of the Stmastown Racing a newly chartered bent on bringing racing back to Mason and in so doing getting streetracers off the streets a supervised and strictly legal racing activity. "We hope to show the public what racing has come to these days," says Association President Dave Gunter, who concedes he and fellow race promoters here are bucking the timeworn image of dragracer as drunken bum. Gunter says his group has secured permission to rope off Fourth and Fifth Streets and half of Railroad Avenue downtown to accommodate the display vehicles, which are expected to come from all over the Pacific Northwest. The presentation is scheduled to begin at noon, and the public is invited. There will be no charge. Top attractions in the large array of display cars expected are at least two exotic top-fuel funny cars, a top-fuel dragster, "High-Dollar Fever" from Olympia, and Tom Turner's recordholding F-gas Corvette from Puyallup. Turner, a former Sheltonian, has turned a 9.84-second quarter a.t 154 miles per hour - "not bad for a 287-inch motor," says Gunter. Also on hand will be various bracket cars from all over the state, Oregon and perhaps even British Columbia. "And the racres themselves will be here to talk to people, to tell about their cars and their sport," says Gunter. "I've written personally perhaps 100 letters. Everybody and his brother in the racing circle knows about this thing, and they're behind it 100 percent." lllllllll RIDING THE RAIL last week as they prepare for Monday's exhibition are the 10- to 13-year-old gymnasts, here with instructor Bonnie Whitmore and assistant Bryce Smith. ;Young gymnasts to give exhibition Young gymnasts will put on an exhibition Monday at 7 p.m. in the middle school gymnasium to culminate the first annual Shelton Parks and Rec Department Summer Tumbling and Gymnastics Program.
