have a great reputation, l always
thought that it was e xper sivc, but a

can't believe it is so affordable!

The summer weightlift-
ing program at Shelton
High School is open to all
athletes every Monday from
5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and ev-
ery Wednesday beginning at
4 p.m.
The program, instructed
by the strength coach Lorna
Mart'mson and Shelton com-
munity member TedDepoe,
is free to all and focuses on
the Olympic weight lifting
program.
"The weightliRing pro-
gram is Olympic lifting
and we'll be using a modi-
fied version that's better for
athletes and leaves them a
little less prone to injuries,"
Depoe said. "The program
will definitely help the ath-
letes' strength and probably
their speed."
Depoe, a 1995 and 1999
US Junior Olympics power
lifting gold medalist, is plan-
ning to begin training with
Coach John Thrush, the
2000 US Olympic weight-
lifting coach, at the Olympic
Regional Training Center
soon.
"If I get things down good
enough to get to nationals,
well see about me trying for
the Olympics team," he said.
Depoe began lifting-
weights 18 years ago in
1993 With Rich Unterseher,
who ran the weightl~ing
program at SHS until his
retirement a few years ago.
Depoe said he took a
break from lifting about 10
years ago and realized his
back and legs were aching
and one day, they locked up
on him while he was work-
ing.
"I knew I had to get back
to the gym at that point," he
said. "When I got back into
lifting weights, I started to
feel a lot better and then I
continued not just for my

health but because I enjoy
it."
Depoe is hoping more ath-
letes take advantage of the
summer program because of
the benefits of the Olympic
weightlifting program.
"This program will im-
prove your speed, flexibil-
ity and stamina," he said.
"It will do more for your
strength, but you may not
see it because you're work-
ing your legs more. Athletes
from all sports can benefit
from weightlifting."
He added that he feels
the program is appropriate
for both male and female
athletes.
"The best Olympic liRers
where I train are the women
because they have greater
flexibility than men," Depoe
said.
The part Depoe enjoys
most about weightliRing is
competing against his own
strength.
"The great thing for me
is that I've always strived
to do better," he said. "If I
could liR more each time,
it made me feel that much
better. When I competed,
adranaline kicked in and
lifted more during competi-
tions and won some."
Eately, Depoe's greatest
inspiration in his weight-
lifting has been the accom-
plishments of a man he's
never met.
"I watched A1 Reed com-
pete in Lake Washington
two years ago and he in-
spired me to really get back
into lifting."
Which is how Depee came
to be involved in the sum-
mer weightliRing program.
"It's going to be a good
time watching the kids de-
velop their athletic ability,"
Depee said. "I'm getting
older and the time is coming
when Iql work out for my
own health but lql be focus-
ing more on the kids' devel-
opment."
HS dance team
hows spirit
By EMILY HANSON .
The Shelton High School
2011-12 dance team showed
its spirit at the United Spirit
Association 'Dance Team's
annual summer camp July
7-10 at St. Mart~'s Univer-
sity.
~The level of difficulty was
very high at camp this year,"
head coach Karen White
said..The beginning routines
at this camp were at an inter-
mediate/advance level com-
pared to past camps."
Dining camp, each girl
had to learn three routines
and had to perform them for
evaluation. "Excellent" was
the highest rating given.
The routines taught to
the girls were a camp dance,
then what was called "cho-
reography-to-go" where the
girls had to change the rou-
tine up while performing it
and the final routine was one
the team brought with them
to camp to perform for the
judges.
The team received an "ex-
cellent" rating for their home
and 'choroography-to-go' rou-
tines.
Individual awards, with
the highest rating being "sen-
sational," were also given
during the camp. "soma-
tional" girls were: Madison
Crew, Madison Moran, Shel-
by Trumble, Katrina Marsh,
Cynthia Thurston, Solena
Lopez, Tiahna Neal, Heather
VanOtten and Swenson.
The "sensational" girls
then performed with the "su-
persensational to eliminate
down to "Best in Camp."
Moran and Crow both
made it to the top four for
Best in Camp.
Some of the girls competed
in the drill down competition,
which consists of military/
precision moves. In the pre-
liminary round for drill down,
Neal and Jennifer Monnier
both took first place while
Alana Savage, Swenson,
Kristine Whiteley, VanOt-
ten and Lauren Herrick took
second place and third place
was given to Marsh, Mikayla
Garner, Kassy Kadoun, Sta-
cia Petersen and Lexi Howe.
Advancing from the semi-
finals into the medal finals
were Howe, Whiteley, Gar-
ner, Neal and Monnier. Mon-
nier won a third place medal
for the team.
The team was presented
with Most Improved Team,"
the Friendship Boot and the
"Teamwork Award."
couldn have asked for a
better team for my first year
back as head coach. I am
looking forward to an awe-
some year," White said.
