. Minnie Lovgreen
Mrs. Leo E. (Minnie Rose)
Lovgreen, 86, of Bainbridge
Island, died in her home last
Thursday.
She was bum November 7,
1888 in Norfolk County,
England. As a youngster in
England at the age of 11 she hired
out as a "mother's helper" and
cook to an elderly couple.
Mrs. Lovgreen came to
Canada in 1912 with a brother
and sister-in-law. They were
booked to take the Titanic maiden
voyage hut because they became
impatient with the many delays in
the Titanic's departure time, they
boarded the S.S. Magantic
instead. Later most of Mrs.
Lovgreen's family followed, 33 in
all including her parents, aunts,
uncles and most of her 18
brothers and sisters.
At the end of World War I,
Minnie Rose Lovgreen was
employed in Vancouver, B.C.
keeping chickens at a government
experimental station. In 1975,
approximately 60 years later, Mrs.
Lovgreen compiled much of her
chicken knowledge into a quaint
little paper booklet, "Minnie Rose
Lovgreen's Recipe for Raising
Chickens." Mrs. Lovgreen was
self-taught and learned to read in
Sunday School.
In Canada and later in Seattle,
she worked as a children's nurse
and first came to Bainhridge
bland in 1920 with an employer
who owned a summer cottage at
the country dub on Restoration
Point. Here she met a young
Danish man, Leo E. Lovgreen,
who worked for the country club
dairy. The couple were married in
1922 and lived for 11 years at the
country club.
The country club closed the
dairy in 1932 and Lovgreens then
rented a farm in New Brooklyn
area on the island, starting their
own dairy with six cows and a

A swell racket
I spent 33 years (in the
Marines)... most of my time
being a high.class muscle man for
Big Business, for Wall Street and
the bankers. In short, I was a
racketeer for capitalism ....
I helped purify Nicaragua for
the international banking house
of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912.
I helped make Mexico and
especially Tampico safe for
American oil interests in 1914.
