Sunday was "Fire Demonstration Day" at Staircase, Olympic National Park. Smokey and 1 strolled through the campground and reminded everyone to go over to the river and watch Ranger Bob explain and demonstrate how the waterhoses work to put out forest fires. After Ranger Bob gave his demonstration, he let the campers hold on to the powerful hoses by themselves. The waterhoses were hooked up down below the right side of the bridge. Many passersby on the bridge received a free shower, whether they wanted it or not, from someone below aiming the powerful hose at them! Smokey and I both got a tum at holding the waterhoses. It about knocked me over. We were standing at least 75 feet from the bridge, and the water hit it full force. So you know that they're powerful and that they do the job. It was a beautiful Sunday, and when the weather gets good it means more fun outdoors; and when there's more fun outdoors it means more people; and when there's more people, it means being that much more careful. So when you're out enjoying nature -- be sure to always be careful. Did you know that the last three words in the last sentence are Smokey's ABC's? Yep, they are! About 100 little campers were there enjoying a week of hiking and swimming and making friends. Tuesday we visited the second Grays Harbor 4-H session out at Panhandle. It was just as friendly and fun as the first! Each week is getting better and better for Smokey and me. Week by week we meet and teach more people about being careful in our forest and how they can help Keep Washington Green. I'm going off to Alaska for a couple of weeks for my vacation x / - but Smokey will remain and travel around to parks and camps, AM radioi preaching his good words. I'll be back for the fair, so while I'm gone - take care!
