Fastpitch laurels go Ma.nke to host Lumbermen s cl.,ms • fifth ° took fifth place overall in a field Tournament last weekend at Callanan Park. Its 4-1 record in the six-team affair was matched by Mather& Sons of Vancouver, but Lutnbermen's took first place by virtue of its 6-4 win over Mather. in the tournament opener Friday night Olympia's Evergreen Olympic Realty rolled by local rival Log Cabin 9-I. Evergreen broke it open with a nine-run fifth inning highlighted by Bob Triplelt's two-run triple. The second game, which ultimately decided the tourney, w Lumberman's use the long ball to take an early 6-0 lead over Mather& Sons. Kevin Dorcy, Larry Carneiro and Curt Stracke hit circuit shots and Dick Yohn weathered a pair of two-run rallies by Mather enroute to a 14-strikeout performance to gain the win. In Saturday morning's opener lterzog ltomes of Portland downed Land A Goshen 7-1. lterzog's shortstop Steve Johnson poled a two-run homer to lead the way while John Stancil led Land A Goshen with a pair of hits. Mother & Sons bounced back to hand Log Cabin an 11-3 drubbing. Catcher Tim Mackin paced the attack with three for Soccer, anyone? Soccer enthusiasts take note: An organizational meeting with regard to this fall's proposed Shelton Parks and Recreation soccer program will be held August 10 at 8 p.m. in the city hall building. All persons interested in playing, coacldng or just asking questions are encouraged to attend. Clinics for coaches and players are planned to follow in the weeks to come - probably on Saturdays. and Evergreen fought to a 2-2 tie. The tight tourney schedule prohibited extra-inning games, so by tournament rules Land A Goshen got the nod, having outhit Evergreen six to five. Herzog handed Lumberman's its only loss, by an 8-I score. Steve Johnson hit his second home run while Lumbermen's Curt Stracke scored his club's only run on his second round tripper. Mather& Sons scored twice in the first inning on Mark Burroughs home run and went on to down Evergreen 4-2. Greg Soule limited the Olympia team to three harmless singles. Log Cabin used a seven-run first inning highlighted by Stan Cole's three-run homer to beat Herzog 10-9 in the wildest game of the tourney. Steve Johnson's third home run, a three.run blow, brought Herzog within one run before its seventh-inning rally died. Lumbermen's downed Land A Goshen 10-3 in the Saturday night finale. Two-run home runs by Kevin Dorcy and Larry Carneiro paced a five-run second inning and Lumbermen's Galen Wright subdued Land A Goshen's hitters to register the win. In the Sunday opener Mather & Sons edged Herzog 2-1. Each team collected five hits in a pitching duel between Mather's Randy Mather and Herzog's Mel Hansen. : Log Cabin scored five times in the fifth inning and rode Jerry Drescher's two.hit pitching to a 7-0 win over Land A Goshen in game 11. Lumbermen's Dick Yohn ripped a two-run double in the sixth inning to give Lumbermen's a 3-1 win over Evergreen. Galen Wright picked up the win with last-inning relief help from Mel Martin. Bryan Hardy tripled and scored Evergreen's only run in the fourth. Mather& Sons downed Land run and Dale Lunde closed it with a two-run double. Pitcher Greg Soule meanwhile set down Land A Goshen on just four hits. Herzog edged Evergreen 3-2 as Mitch Ferring scored from third on a wild pitch in the fifth. Devin Kanda provided all of Evergreen's offense, going three for three and driving in both Evergreen runs. Lumbermen's closed out the tourney with a 2-0 win over Log Cabin. Larry Carneiro's first-inning double scored Kevin Dorcy with the only run needed. Lumbermen's added an insurance run in the sixth and Dick Yohn shut the door on Log Cabin, allowing only two hits and fanning nine. Selected to the tournament all-star team were Mather& Sons Tim Mackin and Greg Soule, Land A Goshen's Ron Pike, Evergreen's Bryan Hardy, Herzog's Steve Johnson and Steve Hase, Log Cabin's Stan Cole and Mike Rich and Lumberman's Larry Carneiro and Dick Yohn. Lumbermen's outfielder Curt Stracke, who tied for the tournament lead with three home runs, was named Most Valuable Player. MANKE'S TOM FREDSON lashes a single. The local nren lost twice in the triple elimination tourney, first 4-6 to Lucky Lager of Yakima and then 2-9 to Pierce Realty of Yakima, before coming back to upset Uptown Tavern of Richland 4-2 and the defending state champion Wenatchee Olys 1-0. In the latter upset, Manke pitcher Shelby West threw a six-hitter and went the route to record the shutout. Finally, Coca-Cola of Yakima beat Manke 6-3 to force the local club from the tournament. Against the defending AA open division champion Olys, Manke pulled it out in the seventh and final inning when Duane Makoviney singled and scored on a fielder's choice after a walk and a sacrifice fly by Bob Miller. Against Uptown, Terry Knight singled to open the first and Mike Marshall followed suit before Miller drove Knight to third with a fielder's choice. Then Tom Marshall cracked a triple, scoring both Knight and Miller. In the fourth, Dale Campagna's single drove home Tom Marshall, who'd walked. Marshall scored again in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Steve DeMiero. Knight and Marshall singled again in the seventh but were stranded. In their loss to Coca-Cola, the local man scored first on Miller's home run in the second. Mike Bariekman doubled and scored in the fifth and Tom Marshall came home on a sacrifice fly by Campagna after Tom Fredson's single. Coke scored once in the first on a homer, four times in the third on a single, a walk, a double and a homer and once in the fourth. Losing pitcher was Clyde Rains. (Please turn to page twenty.)
