Runners are advised to show up, with a lap counter, at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled 8:30 a.m. start. The object, of course, is to record as many laps as possible in the allotted hour. Two-time winner Brian Brouillet, formerly of the University of Puget Sound, last year wound up just 110 yards shy of 11 miles. The world record, set by Jos Hermens of Holland, is 13 miles mid 10 yards. Race coordinator again is Shelton runner John Boggs. Today's better reels are made so well it's often easy to look on them as "perpetual motion" machines that will keep on working forever with little care. The directions say to take them apart regularly for cleaning and oiling. In between those times a number of little things can insure better performance. One is to check the little roller on a spinning reel which the line moves across. If it doesn't run free, it can develop grooves from the abrasion of line moving over one spot. The grooves in turn will ruin a good line in only a few casts. If it doesn't run freely, it will also cause a lot of friction, making it even more difficult to play a large fish. Another simple thing is to back off the tension on the drag at the end of the day. This takes pressure off the individual parts and keeps them resilient longer. Limerick couples play Twenty-one couples enjoyed a two-ball twosome last Saturday at Lake Limerick golf course. Winners for the day were as follows: Low Gross: First, Mary Lou Nault and AI Meyer; tied for second, Jo Boyd and Dallas Wells, Bee Hewins and Warren Hebart.
