COOKIN"
Mason County 4][t members Molly Hutchins, left, Zachary Hansen and Winter Baker help
weekend's Mason Area Fair.
Hardwprking 4H students from
around Mason County have been
working in~ shifts at the port fair-
grounds this week to make the
grounds and buildings beautiful
and clean for the fair, 4H group
leaders Lorraine Baker and Dena
Ostenson said on Tuesday.
"The kids have been doing the
4H building, now they're here
beautifying the barns and fair-
grounds,~ Ostonson said.
While the more than 300. 4H
kids out of 32 4H groups in Ma-
son County have been getting the
buildings and grounds ready and
they've also been busy preparing
their animals and exhibits, Baker
said.
During the fair, 4H kids will
also operate a kitchen and food
booth under adult supervision.
This year, the 4H building will
house all of the projects completed
by those 300 kids.
"It's things that they've made
through the year that relates to
their project," Baker said.
However, 4H isn't only prepar-
ing for fair. On August 19, Mason
County 4H is planning a dinner
auction to raise funds for the or-
ganization..

Both Ostenson and Baker said
that 4H teaches kids how to be

community and needs funding to
continue that mission.

It's getting close to the annual
Harstine Island Community Club
rummage sale. It will be Satur-
day, Aug. 6. If you've been there
beforeyou know a line starts form-
ing at the front door around 8:30
a.m. People gather and talk, sip
on some coffee and wiggle their
toes, anxious for the door to open
promptly at 9 a.m. The hall will
stay open until around 1 p.m. This
is one of the biggest fundraisers
for the club. And how do they get
the stuff to raise the money - from
you. They need your wonderful
used things
that are still
in good shape,
but just aren't
used by you any
more. We've
talked about
volunteering
before in the
MIKE column, like the
CALLAGHAN need to replace
Pain Wood. The
idea of donating
unwanted goods is an easy way to
volunteer and do something posi-
tive for the island. Just look around
your home or garage or yard and
decide what it is you need to get
rid of and take'it to the community
club. Volunteers, led by the likes of
Barbara LaJune, Mary Nichols and
others, will sort through the items
you bring in. I'm not sure when
you can bring it to the hall, you
will have to call Barbara or Mary.
Usually, after Thursday's Women's
Club meeting, donations have been
lei~ inside the hall. There is always
a flood of donations on Friday night
and somehow the work gets done,
so to help, bring in your goods ear-
ly. When the doors open at 9 a.m.
on Saturday, there is a stampede of
buyers who rush in to find the
treasures you have so generously
donated. So, please, volunteer and
donate.
Over the years the Picker-
ing Community Club has had
their rummage sale on the same
day. These are not competing sales,
but they have worked together
as an attractive reason for people
from Shelton and Allyn to drive out
here. Jan Edwards from Pickering Augu=
