Water restrictions begin
By GREG SKINNER
Mason County officials
announced Tuesday, an
immediate restriction on
water use for three water
districts.
The dry summer and
extreme hot weather have
put significant stress on
the water system, said Tom
Moore of Mason County
Utilities. Until further
notice restrictions are in
effect for Beard's Cove,
Rustlewood and Hartstene
Pointe.
Moore advised residents
to do oqtdoor watering be-
tween 7 p.m, and 7 a.m.,
keep the amount to one
inch per week and do full
wash loads of dishes and
clothes.
The pumps are maxed
out and there is not much
more to give, Moore said.

City day camps closed due to low attendance
By KEVAN MOORE
The City of Shelton
decided to cancel its
summer day camp program
early last week and Friday,
July 24, was the last day of
activities.
The progTam got under
way on June 22, but only
had a weekly attendance
average of eight kids.
"The difficult decision
to cancel the program was
solely based on financial
considerations," said
Shelton Parks DireCtor
Mark Ziegler. "The need for
safe, enriching programs for
youth is still needed in the
community and hopefully
the city can continue to offer
this or a similar program in
the future."
Ziegler said that the city
mandates that direct costs
of a recreation program
are recovered through fees,
grants, donations and in-
kind contributions or, other
means and that a minimum
number of participants
were needed to make the
camp program feasible. As
it turned out, though, the
program ran for five weeks
without any increase in
participation.
Ziegler said costs for the
use of school district facilities
and maintaining adequate
staffing levels were the
major costs associated with
the program. He said the
school district charges $10
per hour for the gym that
the camp was run out of, at
a cost of $500 per week.
"I am not sure why
participation did not
increase this year after
running in the summer of
'08," Ziegler said, noting
that program information
was distributed to all local
schools, within May city
utility billing and through
an extensive mail and e-mail
list. "Day camp staff even
spent a Saturday outside
Wal-Mart and Fred Meyer
touting the program," he
added.
Ziegler was at a loss for
the low turnout at the camps
for other reasons, as well.
"Economic times may be
playing a role in the low
participation, but through
discussions with other area
recreation departments, day
camp participation rates are
still very strong."
Lastly, the city's day
camp program received a big
boost earlier this summer
when a local organization
called Toys for Kids Plus
donated $10,000.
"I still have not discussed
specifics with the Toys for
Kids Plus organization
yet as to the status of the
donation," Ziegler said.
"There is still a portion of
the donation dedicated to
provide scholarships for
youth programs that is
available."
