Thursday, July 30, 2020 — Shelton-Mason County Journal — Page A-7 Squaxintribe receives grant money for tiny homes By Gordon Weeks gordon@masoncountycom The Squaxin Island Tribe received a federal CARES Act grant of $899,997 to con- struct 15 tiny homes that will provide temporary lodging for families affected by COVID-19 to quarantine, and provide utility assistance to families The grants are earmarked for tribes to help them prepare forand respond to COVID-19. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Develop- ment recently announced the award of almost $17.4 million in CARES Act HUD Communi- ty Development Block Grants to 15 federally recognized tribes and Alaska Native vil- threats to the public health or safety of tribal residents. “Today’s grant announce- ment will 'help families throughout Indian Country to access essential resources amid the coronavirus outbreak,” Ben Carson, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, stated in a July 17 news release. is . one of five Washington tribes that received a total of $5,694,484 in grants. The Lummi Nation Hous- ing Authority near Belling- ham received almost $1.5 mil- lion to construct 14 new hous- ing units. The Muckleshoot Housing Authority in Auburn received $900,000 to construct three new housing units. Tribe near Olympia will use a $900,000 grant to construct an emergency response center and purchase a modular unit, which will be used as a domes- tic violence prevention center. The Tulalip Tribes of Wash- ington in Tulalip will use a $1.5 million grant to provide rental and utility assistance to families financially affected facing financial hardship. NEWS BRIEFS BaIIDts for primary election due Tuesday Ballots have been out for a couple weeks, but voters must turn them back in by next week. Ballots for the upcoming primary election, which includes local fire levy measures and races for county, state and federal offiCes, must be post- marked by Election Day on Tuesday or dropped off at one of the county ballot box locations. Results will be released at about 8 ‘ p.m., according to the county auditor’s office. The county’s canvassing board will review ballots Aug. 17 and is sched- uled to certify the election results Aug. 18. A list of measures and races is available at www.masoncountyelec- tions.us. ' The woman was riding on a mo- torcycle with a 27-year-old Kent man Monday afternoon near Hamma Ham- ma Road when the vehicle in front of them slowed to make a turn. The mo- torcycle left the road and went off the road, causing the woman to fall off. Another motorcycle, driven by a 26—year-old Kirkland man, was driv- ing side-by-side with the 27-year-old. His motorcycle struck the rear of the vehicle, which was driven by 32-year- old Beaverton, Oregon, man. The woman and her three passen- gers — a 30—year-old Shelton woman and two Shelton girls ages 10 and 8 were transported to Mason General Hospital in Shelton. The vehicle driven by the 34-year- old woman was totaled. The Shelton man’s vehicle had re- portable damage. The cause of the collision is under investigation, according to a Washing— ton State Patrol memo. .
