Wilderness Hike Over the weekend Mick and Donna Simmons and children, Michael and Julie, and a niece, Christina Johnson, went on a wilderness hike into Alpine Lakes on the Hoodsport District. The day-long hikes across snowfields in the hot, sunny weather made for a spectacular view of the Olympic Mountain range. However, the hungry deer and horse flies, capable of biting through all protective clothing, kept everyone moving in the daylight hours. Hoodsport cadet troop 119 made an emergency survival hike up the Mt. Townsend Trail, departing from Hoodsport on July 16. Six girls and two brothers, accompanied by their leaders, Donna Simmons, Dicie Ball and Deloris Velkov, hiked in two miles to Camp Windy where they set up camp under rainy skies. Three days were spent in pouring-down rain with evening activities consisting mainly of drying out. At camp the cadet scouts were given sealed orders containing simulated emergencies for which each had to apply the emergency survival and first-aid knowledge in which they had received training. All girls passed their tests, which ranged from constructing emergency shelters to treating for fractures. While others in camp worked to stay dry, Donna Simmons, son Michael and Robin Velkov hiked three miles on up the trail to Silver Lakes. They found the lakes surrounded with snow and didn't stay long with an icy cold wayward wind sweeping across the area. Softball Season Ends Mama's softball team, sponsored by Harry Coles, wound up the season placing third in both the league and district. The team was presented with the Mason County district sportsmanship award. Cinda Johnson was awarded the most valuable player trophy at the district tournament.
