Do you have old-time pictures
or local historical artifacts that
you would like to exhibit? Or
would you like to demonstrate
pioneering techniques like
quilt-making, shake splitting,
wagon wheel making, etc.?
This past week we visited the
Mason County fairgrounds to
inspect an exhibit hall being
offered without charge to the
Mason County Historical Society.
Jerry Smith, fair manager, showed
us a space over 60 feet long that
could be used as an exhibit space
for pioneering and historical
exhibits.
Anyone interested in having a
booth can contact Mrs. kene
Davis, 275-2032, or George
Province, 426-4071.
On our way back from the
fairgrounds we stopped to inspect
a log cabin on the Skokomish
Indian reservation. This is one of
the hand-hewn log cabins that has
been suggested as a permanent
exhibit for the Bicentennial
exhibit at the fairgrounds next
year. Mrs. Colleen Strong said it
was built by her father-in-law
around 1940.
It is a large cabin built of
notched logs. It would have to be

taken apart, reassembled and
restored at the fairgrounds.
Back to the waterfront, we'd
like to report that Hood Canal
water temperatures hit 72 degrees
F. this past weekend. At this
temperature the oysters are sure
to spawn. At these temperatures
they are no longer as good eating,
but they do become avid mothers
and fathers, so we can probably
expect another good crop of baby
oysters soon.
Grace Hunt, Terra Linda,
celebrated her 86th birthday with
a robust family reunion at the
home of her daughter, Hazel
Bogard, at Kitsap Lake near
Bremerton. Relatives gathered
from far and near. All of her
children attended - Alice
McKelvey, Buffalo, New York;
Mary Parker and Mertha
McArthur, Los Gates, California;
Charlotte Maser, Seattle; and Bill
Hunt, Belfair. All were
accompanied by at least part of a
family. Nieces, nephews,
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren abounded.
Forty-eight in all dined on
barbecued salmon and oysters.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wensky
(Charlotte) recently had a three
generation visit when Charlotte's
90-year-old aunt, Helen Griffith,
her daughter, May Heimberger,
and her daughter, Bonnie
Thompson, all of Bellingham,
spent three days with the
Wenskys.
The following week Mr. and
Mrs. William Cruiser, formerly of
Bainbridge Island, now living in
Minnesota, visited the Wenskys.
This was followed by a family
reunion at Belfair State Park.
Ramona Hedstrom recently
made a flying trip to Dillworth,
Minnesota, to bring her mother,
Mrs. Mary Hartl, here to the ~:~aal
for a summer visit. She stayed
with her sister, Mrs. John
McManus, while in DiUworth.
Both Ramona and her mother are
enjoying our coastal weather after
98-degree heat with high
humidity in Minnesota.
Pal Dukes, Tom Moore and
Jim Lundvick arrived safely in
Ketchikan, Alaska, July 11 after
sailing most of the way from the
North Shore port dock a few
weeks ago. They left Port
Townsend just a month earlier.
They had purchased our sailboat
last winter, refitted her for the
trip, and renamed her "Eros."
