To My Dear Friends snd Family:
My days, since coming to the
beautiful area which I just wish
I could share with all of you, have
been long and busy ones.
A1 and Mary Wooldridge can
probably tell you how much work
had to be done to prepare for
opening June 7th. The carpenters
came and took out a wall opening
another area and giving us more
room fox" candy, magazines, post-
cards, children's toys, and slides.
The studio is a very unique"-
ding about the size of the L.M.
dry goods department with a
huge granite fireplace in one end
which is open all around, allow-
ing the customers tO walk around
it into an area where the maga-
zinesi candy, postcards, toys and
slides are on display.
THE OLD LOG building is
beautiful and the fixtures built
of this knotty pine is very inter-
esting. People who have traveled
in many parks say this is the
most beautiful. The side walls
are displayed with beautihfl paint-
ings---oils and water colors--ran-
ging from $25 to $800.
The scenery here is most beau-
tiful and changes daily. I have
been so fortunate with m new
slide camera to have some beauti-
Iul shots which I shall gladly share
with you when I get ome.
I believe I am enjoying the wild
flowers more than the average
because I have never had an op-
portunity to see them in such
mass. I find each week brings new
color into the scene. At present
the blue lupine, paint brush, wild
buck wheat, hollyhocks, a yellow
daisy, and a few more that I'm
not familiar with are in their
prime.
I'VE HAD SEVERAL nice short
trips into the quaint town of
Jackson, once to see the street
show put on by the town folks
and again to see the Laubins , vdao
are interpreting the original Ind-
ian dances. I spent one evening m
their charming home and found
them most interesting in relating
all about their travels and their
connections with the Indian people.
Last week Due of my girls and
I went to the movie set where
Warner Brothers is filming
"S p e n c e r Mountain", starring
Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara.
The story Is really supposed to be
in Kentucky but with all this view
of the Tetons they will probably
change the location. I have taken
several shots of this location which
will no doubt be interesting.
From June 25 to July 6 an old
friend of mine from Gig Harbor
spent her vacation at Jenny Lake
Lodge and I was able to have my
dinner with her each evening and
on my days off we took two long
trips to Dubois and circled through
Lander, Varson, and Pinedale, then
home by way of Jackson. The
second trip was through Yellow-
stone•
YESTERDAY we really had
(tOA, npoln which was needed very
badly but my sympathy went out
to thc campers. We bnilt a nice
fire in the fireplace, put on the
coffee pot and tried to I)rlng a
liLtle pleasantness to our visitors.
The Jackson Lake Lodge offers
many interesting things to do and
I hope I shall be able to attend
a few• To spotlight a few, begin-
ning next Monday to Aug. 23 each
week the symphony will he on
Monday nights, film festival of
prize winning foreign films Tues-
days, string ensemble Wedncsdays,
the Laubins Fridays, one night
lhey have square dancing. This is
for the public and the employes
can gel admission at reduced
rates.
Much planning and efforL is
made fox' the young help here and
this year they will only accept
those who have had a personal
interview. Of 600 employed there
were 8,000 applicants and believe
me there is quite a tin'never. It
doesn't pay to bhfff your way into
work you don't understand. A
great majority of the responsible
jobs are given to older people and
they seem to follow this line of
work, going to the south in the
winter and then here for the
summer. I have met some very
lovely people here but Lhey can
never replace nay old friends of
Shelton, whom I miss serving.
I send my greetings to all of
you and hope to be back In
October.
Sincerely,
Mabel Burk

Mr. William M. Dickie
Editor, Shelton Journal
Dear Mr. Diekie,
It has been some time since I
have read any item in your paper
concerning what progress has been
made, toward solving our hospital
problem. Then, in your Journal is-
sue of July 26th, it was with great
disappointment I read that, to
date, no progress has been made.
The need for a new hospital in
this community has been positive-
;lY established. Wc have known
this fro' a long time and here we
are, no closer to a sohztion than
we were three or four ),cars ago.
How long are we going to ignore
a situation that is so vital to
this community? Are we going to
watt until the Stte comes in and
closes the doors of our prcsent
institutions ?
It takes no economic wizard to
realize that the nceds of this small
eommtmity could best be filled by
one institution---both from the
standpoint of excellcnct in facili-;
ties and economy of operating
costs. However, we st:ill tave no
positive plan for a go-ahead In
such an urgent matter. As for
raising money to match a federal
grant, this much I know-..-the
people of Shelton have, by work-
ing together toward solving com-
mon needs, accomplished nlany
things. Sm'ely, the matter of pro-
riding excellent hospital facilities
is one of our most important pro-
blems.
So please--.you committee mem-
a bers and hospital boards-give us
