Shelton woman escapes kidnapping By NATALIE JOHNSON natalie@masoncounty.com A 33-year-old Shelton woman narrow- ly escaped a kidnapping attempt early Saturday morning on Olympic Highway North. The man accused of attacking her, James Alan Shelton, 55, was convicted in 1974 of rape and murder in Snohom- ish County. He was released from prison two years ago. At about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, the victim was walking up the hill on Olym- pic Highway North near Harvard Street when she heard a rustling in the bushes to her left, said Lt. Les Watson of the Shelton Police Department. "She heard what sounded like foot- steps," he said. "She assumed it was a person and then this guy popped out be- hind her." Watson said the woman told police that Shelton walked in the opposite di- rection at first, then turned and attacked her from behind. "They ended up in some kind of a struggle," he said. The woman started screaming and bit Shelton's hand. She broke away from him and flagged down the first car that came in her direction, which Watson said happened to be a Mason County Sheriffs deputy. The sheriffs deputy alerted other units in the area ~¢ith the Shelton's description. After a few minutes, Watson said, a Shelton Police Officer stopped a dark-colored pickup truck with its lights out. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle matched the victim's description of her attacker and had a fresh bleeding wound on his hand. The suspect, later identified as Shel- ton, was booked on charges of second degree kidnapping and fourth degree as- sault and is being held on $100,000 bail in the Mason County jail. Watson said the department is not sure what the purpose of Shelton's at- tack was. "He's been pretty evasive about mo- tive," he said. The victim was unharmed in the at- tack. "The victim seems to be doing fine," Watson said. "She's certainly going through some difficult times as a re- ' sult."
