I often respond to citizen
complaints regarding ag-
gressive dogs, but upon
contacting the dog owner, I
find that they are unaware of
the relevant laws in Mason
County regarding dog owner-
ship. Some residents of the
county think they can let their
dog run loose. While there is
no leash law in the county,
(there is a leash law within
the City of Shelton), allowing
your pet to run loose can have
negative repercussions. Citi-

other people and their pets,
and it can be a hazard to your
pet as well. Be a good neighbor
and pet owner by taking the
proper steps to ensure your
animal does not roam free
away from your property.
Good pet owners make sure
their animals have proper
shelter, get clean fresh water,
are fed daily and receive all
necessary medical treatment.
Additionally, keeping your
pet under control at all times
helps ensure the safety of
your pet and the safety of oth-
ers. Failure to do these simple
things could result in a visit

I am often asked how and
where to license a pet. We do
not have licensing require-
ments in Mason County; how-
ever, if you reside within the
City of Shelton, your dog does
need to be licensed. You can
license your dog at the Shel-
ton Police Department.
"Being a responsible pet
owner also means being a
good neighbor. If your dog
spends its days and nights
barking, whining and crying,
take that as a clue that your
dog needs attention. Dogs are
social animals and barking
is one type of communication
that they use, but barking can
mean different things. Find
out why your dog is barking
and work to solve the prob-
lem. Providing your dog with
training and giving it some
attention will often resolve
the barking problem. Not only
will your dog thank you, but
your neighbors will as well.

As part of my duties with
the Mason County Sheriffs
Office I am assigned a K-9;
his name is Jack, and he is a
182-pound Great Dane. We
teach public education to the
community focusing on pet
safety, pet care and bullying.
Jack is an extra-large dog
and can be a handful; how-
ever, proper training, being
a responsible pet custodian,
and keeping Jack in his fully
fenced yard ensures that he is
well cared for and that we are
being good neighbors.
