Shelton—Mason County Journal’s
deadline.
Voter turnout on the first bal-
lot count was 38.37%, but that
number will rise significantly: the
county elections office received
about 8,000 ballots Monday and
Tuesday, said Fina Ormond, the
county’s elections manager. That
compares with the 11,500 ballots
the county received during the
previous two weeks, she said.
As for the last—minute voting,
“1 think the ballot was very long
— people wanted to see the can—
didates,” she said.
Ormond added, “It seems to
me that more people are voting
who haven’t voted in a while.”
There was no drama in the
race for the Mason County Com-
mission. Republican incum—
bent Kevin Shutty faced no de-
clared opponent and received
3,272 votes on the first count for
91.35%; 310 voters wrote in other
names.
Mason County Commissioner
Randy Neatherlin, who identi-
fies as an Independent, received
3,134 votes for 54.04% on the
initial count, and Republican
challenger Ted Jackson received
2,600 votes for 44.84%, setting
up a contest between the two on
the Nov. 3 ballot.
The ballot to merge Mason
County Fire Protection District
No. 1 and Mason County Fire
Protection District No. 18 was
passing on the first count with
79.04%. Mason County Fire Pro-
tection District No. 16’s levy was
ahead by a mere vote, with 422
voting “yes” and 421 voting “no.”
Mason County Fire District
No. 4’s emergency medical ser-
vices levy was passing with
57.23%. North Mason Regional
Fire Authority’s emergency med-
ical services levy was passing
with 68.91%.
Of the 36 candidates for gov-
ernor on the ballot, Democratic
Gov. Jay Inslee led the pack
on the first Mason County bal-
lot count with 6,581 votes for
41.46%. Placing second and third
were Republican challengers
Loren Culp with 4,900 votes for
30.87%, and Tim Eyman with
1,616 votes for 10.18%.
The two top vote-getters for
Congressional District 6 in Ma-
son County are Democratic in-
cumbent Derek Kilmer with
4,583 votes for 38.60%, and Re-
publican challenger Elizabeth
Kreiselmaier with 3,428 votes
