The Sweetwater Park project, pro-
viding a Wi-Fi hub. for North Mason
School District Students and building a
commercial space on North Shore Road
were among topics of discussion during
the Aug. 3 Port of Allyn meeting via
Zoom.
“I’m concerned about moving ahead
(with Sweetwater Park) without other
Port of Allyn commissioners saying
go ahead,” Commissioner Ted Jack-
son said during the meeting. “I’m not
against the project — except there are
some parts I am against.”

School, has been years in the mak-
ing. Since 2016, the project has been a
partnership between the Port of Allyn
and Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement
Group.
Mendy Harlow, executive direc-
tor of Hood Canal Salmon Enhance-
ment Group, attended the'port meet-
ing to provide background and ad-
dress questions.,The project comes up
against a Monday deadline to finalize
supporting documents in PRISM, the
state’s Recreation and Conservation
Office’s project database.
Harlow said this is the group’s third
try for an RCO grant, “and we got some
really good comments on our presenta-
tion.”
Harlow and Port of Allyn Executive
Director Lary Coppola presented the
park proposal before the RCO board
during a Zoom meeting June 26.
The park is slated to include a “nat—
ural” playground, hiking trail, and in-
terpretive water wheel, among other
features. The project is on the RCO’s
online PRISM database as Project #20-
1840.
Commissioner Jackson said he is
concerned with the port spending a
proposed $70,000 in taxpayer dollars to
purchase and “clean up” Brian Peters-
en’s property, adjacent to the Schindel-
heim Property that the port already ac-
quired for the park’s development.
“Cleaning up a property like that is
a good thing to do,” Harlow said.
A key component of the park project
is rerouting Sweetwater Creek to re-
move a fish passage barrier.

“If we don’t acquire that parcel we
can’t reroute the creek,” Harlow said.
“The neat thing is we get to reconnect
salmon species that use that creek.”
While there was dispute regarding
the ongoing park project, commission—
ers all voted in favor of acting as an
internet hub for North Mason School
District students during the upcoming
school year.
Coppola said he and the superinten-
dent have been in talks abOut permit-
ting up to 12 students and one staff
member to use the port’s meeting room
for internet access.
“A lot of kids don’t have broad-
band,” Coppola said. “As long as it’s a
