Redman's ad about
port and the drags
A newspaper advertisement
accusing Shelton port commis-
sioners of stalling negotiations
concerning drag racing at Sand-
erson Field drew fire from one
port commissioner Tuesday.
Saying he was upset over
statements contained in the ad
in last week's Journal, which
was signed and paid for by
Rahn Redman, Commissioner
Rick Byrd denied the commis-
sion was stalling.
The port has paid for a mar-
ket analysis for the airport so
commissioners can have facts
to make a decision, Byrd told
Redman during Tuesday's com-
mission meeting. The commis-
sioners aren't going to do any-
thing until they get that mar-
Redman, among other things
in the ad, claimed: "The Port of
Shelton has a contract proposal
created by them for drag racing
and they have one from Walt
Austin yet they are refusing to
go forward with negotiations
on either one! Instead they are
stalling, waiting for what? They
are even being pressured into
spending millions of dollars to
repave the old runway in an at-
tempt to stop racing."
The ad fails to mention that
Redman is executive director of
the Shelton Drag Strip Associa-
tion, which has sponsored and
promoted drag racing at the
airport this summer and last,
and that he is a candidate for
Taylor's position on the port

Cove music
A story in last week's Journal
had the wrong date for a music
program at Jarrell Cove State
Park.
The program, "America's Instru-
ment: The Mountain Dulcimer,"
is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday,
August 18, in the amphitheater
at the park, not on August 11 as
mentioned last week.
Naturalist Stephan Middleton
will demonstrate and talk about
the mountain dulcimer, a smaller
version of the European stringed
instrument similar to the zither.
The mountain dulcimer was devel-
oped in Appalachia and is linked
to early American music.
Jarrell Cove State Park is on
the west shore of Harstine Island
off North Island Drive.
