Olympic Trials qualifier:
ExClimber Pat
swims at nat'Is
Shelton's Pat Penoyar under-
scored his Olympic Trials qualifi-
cation last week in the prestigious
USA Swimming National Champi-
onships in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Having qualified for the 2008
U.S. Trials already in his breast'
stroke specialty's 100- and 200-
meter events, the '04 Climber grad
and Indiana University senior-to-
be met those qualifying standards
yet again in a field that included
Olympic gold medalist Michael
Phelps and world recordholder
Brendan Hansen.
He just missed out on a chance
to swim against Phelps in the
"B" final of the 200 with a time of
2:17.16 for 17th place overall on
the first day of the four-day affair,
and then in the "C" final of the
same event a day later he clocked
a 2:18.19 for fourth place in his di-
vision and 20th overall.
Two days later, finally, the ex-
Climber star made the "C" final of
the 100 breaststroke with yet an-
other Olympic Trials qualifier, his
1:04.12 good for seventh place in
his division and 23rd overall.
LAST YEAR, in his first sea-
son at IU, Penoyar made a splash
by finishing second at the Big
Ten meet in the 100 and the 200
breaststroke and winning honor-
able-mention All-America honors
in the 200 breaststroke and on two
relay teams.
Last month tle Climber grad
qualified for the 2008 Olympic
Trials in the 100 and 200 breast-
stroke at the Indiana Swimming
Senior State Championships in
Bloomington, setting personal re-
cords in both events.
He was part of an unusually
large IU contingent at nation-
als, by the way, with 28 Hoosier
swimmers having qualified for the
championships.

Calling all volleyball gals
Climber girls' volleyball turn-
out starts with two-a-days Mon-
day, August 20, in the Minidome,
reports returning coach Steve
Morgan.
Daily sessions that first week
are from 9 to 11 a.m. and from
1 to3 p.m.
Eligible are all incoming
9th- through 12th-graders, and
Morgan reminds that no one
will be able to so much as touch
a volleyball before she has all
her physical-exam and insur-
ance-waiver paperwork on file
in the office.
That office in the high-school-
ers' case, of course, is at Shelton
High, but to make it easier for
the ninth-graders - who are still
back at the junior high - they
may submit their paperwork
there at their Oakland Bay Ju-
nior High stompin' grounds.
As for the veterans he ex-
pects to be leading the way this
fall, says Morgan, they include
seniors Marissa Hill and Caris-
sa Krumpols along with juniors
Briana McKinley, Annie John-
son, Jessica Janda, Jaci Roaf,
Jessica Scovill and Courtney
White.
"That's my core," says Coach,
noting that the entire group ac-
companied him to a big spike
camp at Central Washington
University this summer.

20-year-old Mike Waters so suc-
ceeded- and in the process joined
an exclusive club at the Timber
Bowl- see next week's Journal.
