Much of Lake Nahwatzel's shoreline is
owned by the Green Diamond Resource
Company. Remnants of a railroad trestle
are still visible in one corner of the lake.
Nahwatzel
Continued from page A-1
of Dick's neighbors came
across a couple of survey-
ors in the forestland. Dick
said they told the neighbor
that they were instructed
not to say why they were
surveying the land.
After that experience,
Dick and his neighbors
started doing research
and found that Green
Diamond had requested
the rezone.
'%Ve had to get orga-
nized," he said.
Together with about
90 lake residents, Dick
formed the Friends of
Lake Nahwatzel in July.
The redesignation of
the land, according to Ma-
son County documents,
could make way for a "per-
formance subdivision,"
which would include its
own water system.
"A performance sub-
division is the county's
mechanism for allowing
environmentally sensi-
tive residential develop-
ment in designated Ru-
ral areas," states a brief
to Mason County pre-
pared by Green Diamond
Project Manager Rhonda
Brewer. "A performance
subdivision could autho-
rize each residential lot
to be 20,000 square feet
in size ... The 248.7 acres
will allow up to 49 lots
to share these costs and
thus make a performance
subdivision economically
possible."
The friends have iden-
tified several concerns
they have about a poten-
tial home development
on the property. First
among them, Dick said.
is preserwng water qual-
ity in the lake.
"Lake Nahwatzel. is
considered a pristine
lake." he said.
Unlike many lakes in
Western Washington,
Lake Nahwatzel does
not have invasive, non-
native plant species and
it does not face problems
with pollution.
"There is a significant
amount of development
in the lake. At some point
you reach a tipping point."
DicV said the entire
area around the lake
was clearcut. Today,
the stand of lakefront
timber owned by Green
Diamond stands mostly
untouched.
There is also a signifi-
cant amount of wildlife
in the area. Eagles nest
in the forestland. Loons,
otters, beavei~s, bears,
deer, cougars and coyotes
have also been seen in
the area.
Despite its untouched
quality, the'Green Dia-
mond owned shoreline
is not devoid of human
activity. During summer
months, people campon
a sandy portion of the
shore behind a disused
and decaying timber rail-
road trestle.
While a popular spot,
it is not an actual public
campground and has no
restroom or garbage fa-
cilities, leaving a problem
for residents and Green
Diamond. A fallen log in
the area is also covered
with graffiti.
Dick said the Friends
of Lake Nahwatzel are
not against Green Dia-
mond selling the land,
but would prefer flit was
sold to a land trust that
could preserve the land
and allow public access.
"Everybody could go
home happy," he said.
"We're looking for any al-
ternative.
This month, the re-
zone request is under
State Environmental
Policy Act (SEPA) re-
view. It is scheduled to
be discussed at a Mason
County Planning Advi-
sory Committee public
hearing at 6 p.m. on Aug.
20 in the county comnus-
sion chambers.
Each December, the
Mason County Board of
Commissioners votes on
rezone application's that
would require changes to
its comprehensive plan.
Until then, Dick said the
Friends of Lake Nahwat-
zel plan to participate
in the process and make
their voices heard.
If Green Diamond,
Mason County and the
Lake Nahwatzel land-
owners can't come to an
agreement, Dick said the
Friends won't rule out the
possibility of a lawsuit.
