Olympic calls for project proposals
Olympic National Forest is solicit-
ing proposals for Title II projects to be
implemented in fiscal year 2013.
Funding will be provided through
the Secure Rural Schools and Com-
munity Self-Determination Act,
which was reauthorized for one year
as part of Public Law 112-141 on
July 6. This act provides payments
to counties as compensation for the
loss of tax income associated with
federal land within their boundar-
ies.
Title II projects are designed to en-
hance forest ecosystems, improve wa-
ter quality or improve existing infra-
structure. By law, they must provide a
direct or indirect benefit to resources
on National Forest lands. Past proj-
ects have included watershed resto-
ration, stream stabilization, invasive
plant treatments and road mainte-
nance.
The Olympic Peninsula Resource
Advisory Committee (RAC) will re-
view the proposals and recommend
projects for funding. The RAC repre-
sents a wide variety of citizen inter-
ests and members are residents of
each of the peninsula counties. RAC
duties have been expanded to in-
clude monitoring projects and mak-
ing recommendations for appropri-
ate changes. Amanda McAdams,
acting forest supervisor, will provide
final approval 'for project implemen-
tation.
