Logan Roadman
only Shelton winner
By EMILY HANSON
Shelton's Logan Roadman walked toward the cage.to the
sound of his name being chanted from all sides by the excited
crowd,
He didn't disappoint them.
In less than two rounds of his bout during the Big Town
Beat Down outdoor cage fight event on Saturday, Aug. 6, at
the Mason County Fairgrounds, Roadman defeated his oppo-
nent, Thomas Pierce, in the main event fight.
"I think my fight went really well," Roadman said. "I did
what ! intended to do in the first round and then changed my
strategy and won in the second round."
Roadman's original strategy was not to stand against
Pierce because he had heard Pierce was a kickboxer. Between
the first and second round, Roadman was told Pierce was good
at jujitsu, so he changed his fighting strategy to match that.
"My strategy was to pick him up and drop him on his head,
but the mat was so slippery I couldn't plant my feet," Road-
man said. "When I realized that, I decided to knock him down
or out. What won my fight was using the guillotine submis-
sion [against Pierce] and he tapped out."
.This was the second fight Roadman, a 2008 Shelton High
School graduate, had ever fought in. He said he bad about one
week's notice before his first fight, which he lost, and that he'd
been training for about two and a half months for this fight.
Roadman, a former SHS wrestler who was league champi-
on his junior year, said mixed martial arts (MMA) has become
his hobby.
"I have a strong background in wrestling and you can't re-
ally go pro with that unless you go in the Olympics, so MMA
is a good transition," Roadman said.
Though Roadman will be training in the near future, he
does not have another fight scheduled yet, his coach, Rex
Love, said.
There were a few other Shelton fighters at the Beat Down,
which was a first for Mason County. Justin Whitley fought in
the fourth bout of the evening, but his fight wasn't what he
expected it to be.
"Justin's opponent dropped out an hour before the fights be-
gan," said Josh Johnson, one of the owners of the Shelton~th-
letic Club, and an event sponsor. "Brian Anderson, an MMA
trainer, was there to watch the fights and he volunteered to do
an exhibition kickbo~dng fight against Justin. Everybody knew
Justin was going to fight and he didn't want to let anyone
down, so he took it, knowing he was going to be an underdog."
Sonya Nelson, the only
woman from Shelton
to take part in the
Big Town Beat Down,
fiercly waits for her
opponent, Heather
Wilson, to get near
her in the cage so she
could throw a punch.
Though her match
went three whole
rounds, Nelson wasn't
able to pull out a win.

Shelton's Justin Whitley gets a kick in against his opponent, Brian Anderson, during his fight at
the Big Town Beat Down. Whitley's original opponent dropped out of the fight one hour before
the event began on Saturday, Aug. 6, so Anderson, a mixed martial arts trainer, volunteered to do
an exhibition, kickboxing fight against Whitley.
Whitley was knocked down in the second round of his fight
-- the first match of his career.
"I do mostly body building, not training for fighting," he
said. "I have a lot of buddies that are into MMA and it's a fast-
growing sport and it's where the money is."
Whitley said that during the fight, he was thinking about
getting a powershot in.
"I prepared for a guy who didn't know what he was doing,
not an instructor," Whitley said. ~The fight went exactly how I
was expecting to go, but I put on a show, though."
Whitley,s next event won't be on the mat. Instead, it will be
on stage at at a bodybuilding event -- the Northwest Champi-
onships Bodybuilding -- in November.
Another Shelton fighter was Senya Nelson, who was!one of
only two women who participated in the event.
Nelson went three rounds against Heather Wilson and lost
in a split decision.
"I haven't been training because doing this fight w~ kind
of impulsive," Ne.lson said. "I wasn't thinking about an ddng
during the fight. It was difficult to think the way I was su' p-
posed to and to followed my coach's instructions." i
Although she lost, Nelson said she felt great and she was
sure she'd fight again.
Johnson said nearly 1,000 people attended the fights. They
were expecting approximately 500.
"There were no incidents and everybody had a good!time,"
Johnson said. "One fighter received a concussion, but other
than that, tho~.~Y~ ........... ,~
He added that he and the other sponsors are hoping ~o hold
this event in Shelton again. He also stated he wanted tolthank
the sponsors as well as Tozier's and Gateway Rental four their
donations toward the event, t
Thursday,
"I also want to give a special ~hank you' to Chet Chapman:
the man who owned the cage we used," Johnson said. "He was
a tremendous help the whole weekend."
The final Shelton fighter, James Settle, lost his bout.
