Identity Needed! -
For Tax_ghecks
Deposit of many checks tender-
ed in payment of June 15 tax
installments has been delayed due
to lack of sufficient identification
for crediting remittances to pro-
per accounts, according to Clark
Squire, Collector of Internal Reve-
nue. Numerous inquiries as to
why checks did not appear on
June bank statements, he said,
have been received from taxpay-
ers.
Identification of a large num—
ber of accounts in the Tacoma
office has been slowed, due to the
tremendous volume of payments
and the fact that thousands of
taxpayers mailed remittances
without attaching them to their
tax statements. The office, Mr.
Squire declared, is making every
effort to deposit checks so they
will appear on July bank state-
ments but it was likely some re-
mittances will not clear until after
August 1.
The collector said he was mak-
ing this explanation so that per-
sons whose checks do not appear
on their statements at the end of
July will understand the situation
and avoid writing the office.

guns of battleships. This striking new picture shows a formidable
force of British aircraft carriers acting as part of an escort of
an important convoy in the Mediterranean. In foreground are
Hurricane fighters ranged ready on the flight deck of H.M.S.
“Victorious,” from which the
picture was taken. Right behind
is Britain’s newest aircraft carrier, the “Indomitable,” followed
by the “Eagle.” A cruiser brings up the rear.
