Powerful Cammarano-Canada
Dry muscled its way into the win-
hers' bracket round of three Tues-
day night in the Olympia Fastball
Tournament by upending the Shel-
ton l~erchants 13-1 behind a 17-hit
assault.
The loss dropped Shelton into
the losers' bracket third round
pairing the Merchants with tne
Olympia Merchants "A" in a 6:30
p.m. encounter last night in the
double elimination~District 8 tour-
nament.
}
THE FAVORED CAMMS, the
No. 1 "A" entry, met the Brewers
"A" last night. In the only other
tourney contest Wednesday the
Attorneys General and South
Sound clashed in another losers'
bracket tilt.
The Brewers downed the Attor-
neys General 7-0, South Sound
tripped Olympia Merchants "B"
7-4 an dthe Olympia Merchants
"A" shutout Panorama City 4-0 in
other Tuesday games.
The teams arc vying for two
berths from District 8 to the State
Fastball Tournament in Richland
August 19-22.
Shelton enjoyed a brief 1-0 ad-
vant&gc through the first frame of
Tuesday's game before the roof
fell in. The Merchants' ace second-
sacker Ray Masks pounded a long
home run over the rightfield wall
just inside the foul line as Shel-
ton's lead-off batter in the bottom
of the first.
MERCHANT TWIRLER Bit:
Nutt stopped the Olympia club in
tl~e first, but the Camms exploded
for four runs in the second and
five runs in the fifth to all but sew
up the verdict. Th~ Camms used
five straight singles, a stolen base
and a Merchant error to plate the
quartet in the second and six hits,
including a towering homer by big
Pat Gosney and a double by Rob
Bert, to get their five more in the
fifth.
Shelton threatened in the third
when Don Brown lashed a double
down the line over firstbase and
Monty Fox followed with a single
to short center one out later, but
Bert came in to relieve starting
pitcher Run Whitaker after Fox's
hit and proceeded to strike out the
side.
Lloyd Muir came to the mound
to take over for Nutt in the sixth
and retired the Caroms without in-
cident, but the Caroms unloaded
the lumber again in the seventh
for four additional tallies. Bert's
three-run homer over the center-
field fence x|as the big blow of the
frame.
Cammarano-Canada Dry's Gos-
hey was the game's standout at
the plate, picking up a single, dou-
ble and home run in three times
up. Rug Huff bagged two singles
in as many appearances at the
dish to pace the losers.

Only two South Sound batters
reached as far as first base and
none got any farther as Shelton's
Merchants coole~ the Sound outfit
5-0 in the opening round of the
District 8 Fastball Tournament in
Olympia Monday night.
Shelton's hard-throwing right-
handcr Bill Nutt was the mound
master in this one. Nutt fanned 15
Sound swingers and hurled no-hit
ball in the seven-inning fray, and
had a perfect game going for
himself through 6 1/3 innings.
THEN IN the 7th, after lead-
off hitter for South Sound Jim
Ishahaara went down on strikes
for the third straight time, Nutt
gave up his first and only walk
to the next man up, Bud Chapel.
Larry Blume grounded to short
to force Chapel at second, but
Chapel broke up any attempt of
a double play in the process.
Chuck Nylund then skyed to Jerry
i Christy in right for the third out
and a Merchant victory. Nylund's
blow was also the sole shot out
of the infield during the evening
for Sound.
Shelton had beaten the same
outfit, a B League entry, 6-1 in a
practice game last Thursday.
The win for Shelton put the
Merchants into second round ac-
tion again the Cammarano-Can-
ads Dry club which beat the Olym-
pia Merchant "B" entry 12-0 in
another no-hitter Monday. In oth-
er first roqnd garnes the Attor-
neys General-defeated the Olym-
pia Merchants "A", 1-0, and the
Brewery "A" beat Panorama City
7-3.
SHELTON PLATED at least
once in each of the first three
frames.
NULL, the Merchant's clean-up
batter, started things rolling in
the first when he smashed a two-
out two-run homer which sailed
over the rightfielder's head and
bounced all the way to the grand-
stands m right-center. Besides
himself, Nutt's blast scored Dave
Swearingen, who had doubled
down the thirdbase line.
An inning later Jerry Young
crossed the dish on Ray Manke's
single to left-center. Young had
gotten into scoring position on a
bunt single and the theft of sec-
ond bas3.
Shelton plated for the fourth
time in the third when Swearingen
came home on a two-base throwing
error. Dave reached first on an
infield single and went to second
on Nutt's bunt one-baser.
--YOUNG'S HALF-swing looping
single to left brought in Bill Fred-
son with Shelton final run in the
fifth. Fredson had walked and had
gone to third on another two-base
miscue on catcher Phil Anderson's
overthrow when he was trying to
get Fredson as Bill was stealing
second.

fourth inning to send Skok. ahead
for good.
